    After weeks of pitiful handwringing...

Do many people, like myself, suffer from the paralysis of analysis? I run scads of searches on this board. If anyone utters something negative about a product I am considering, I rule it out - even if the reviewer has only been recording for three weeks and hasn't figured out how to work his...

    Electroharmonix Ribbon mic

I was doing my usual browse through 8th street audio and ran into this Electroharmonix ribbon mic It looks like the Oktava ml-52. Anyone seen these or played with them? Are they an update/improvement over the Oktava of last year?

    Multi-purpose DI's

This may have been covered before, but "DI" is to short to search under. I am looking for DI (or combo DI and mic pre) that would work for a variety of uses. I would use it live with my upright bass' peizo bridge pickup. Same deal with acoustic guitar. I also want to use it in recording...

    Wierd AKG mic

I have a little AKG D58 mic that I think was intended for talkback purposes. Anyone familiar with these and know of any applications?

    cassette deck as effect

We often talk about the warmth of magnetic tape. I have read of engineers that run their decks at 15 ips to get a more "analog" sound presumably. What about running some tracks through a decent cassette deck (with relatively little wow and flutter) at 1 7/8 ips to really get some tape mojo...

    Old EV

So... I have this old EV mic that has kind of an RCA44 look to it. It is called a V-2A velocity microphone. I had always thought that velocity mics were ribbons, but I pulled the screen and the little cloth pop filter and it looks like a dynamic mic. Also, it originally had the wierd EV...

    Shure 545 hi/lo impedence

I see some older Shure 545's being sold with their original cords with a 1/4" plug that are presumably high impedence. Is it possible to tell which were high impedence without the cord? You see a lot of these on ebay, but I don't want a hi impedence version.

    Pre's with lots of gain

When I use my MD541 on vocals, I really have to push the onboard preamp on my Yamaha AW4416. I have heard that these mics need a preamp with a lot of gain. Any recomendations for inexpensive (<$400) preamps that significantly beat the gain of the Yamaha pre's?

    Kudos to Sennheiser

I sent my MD541 to Sennheiser service a couple of weeks ago. The little frame around the brilliance switch was busted, and I was paranoid that the screw on the belly of the mic was a bass roll-off switch (like a 441) and it was busted. I got a call from Dave at Sennheiser US service, and he...

    MD441 on upright bass?

While I am waiting for my Sennheiser MD441 to be repaired I thought I might as well fantasize about using it. Anyone use on on an upright bass, or have any prediction of how it might work?

    Stoopid power amp question

I have a few power amps laying around I use for PA use. I want to use a bass preamp with one of them, and I would like to use it in bridged mode. Does the amp have to be specifically designed to do this, or is there some jumping you can do to accomplish the same thing if the amp is just...

Genres that call for Extended Range Basses

I've picked up bass again recently because I have started accompanying a friend of mine doing that singer-songwriter thing on acoustic guitar. I noticed after I had worked out parts to his tunes that I never played a note lower than low A. Working with a single acoustic guitar obviously...

    Harvey Gerst- bass god

I have heard rumors that Harvey was one of the chief engineers for the Acoustic Control Corporation, makers of amps used by Jaco, Zep, etc. I recently bought an Acoustic 140 bass head. It really produces the thick meaty bass sound despite its low wattage.

    Sennheiser service

Anyone use Sennheiser US service? Are they good or are there any good alternatives? I have a md541 that has a wonky bass roll-off switch.

    Live or ?

I am supposed to record a church group in a couple of weeks - Lead vox, three backup singers, bass, mandolin, two guitars, drums . I will be using a Yamaha AW4416. My first thought was to multitrack, but I am worried about phase issues. Now I am thinking of just setting up a stereo pair, and...

    woo-hoo!

I hate to gloat, but this hardly ever happens to me. A month and a half ago I was in a pawn shop and spotted a Sennheiser MD441 marked at $200. Unfortunately, I had just made a bunch of purchases and my wife had reached a saturation point. I think her words were, "If you buy one more thing I...
