how to get into the meter bridge of a tascam m512 mixer

hey y’all. a few months ago, i bought extra bulbs for my tascam m512 mixer which had 2 burnt out. i tried looking around the web for a photo of someone’s mixer opened up to maybe see how they got into it, but it was to no avail. anyone have any knowledge about accessing the vu meters without...

vintage or modern mixers with great eq (on a budget!)

basically, the actual output of my preamp is being directly plugged into my recorder. this way, the tascam 38 is getting proper levels since for some reason, the m512 outputs very low channel levels. but, this means i can’t hear my signal when i’m listening and overdubbing. so, i take the...

vintage or modern mixers with great eq (on a budget!)

hey y’all. i was wondering if you guys had any mixers, vintage or modern, that you think have really good eq for the price. i’m really only interested in having 8 channels to bring audio into, 8 buss if possible. preamps be damned, since i use an external preamp anyways and i only use 1 mic per...

    Tascam 244 Input Issue

bump on this older thread, because this sounds like the identical problem i have. i’ve adapted to it (it’s only 1 channel, and cue works fine) and simply mix and monitor on a second 244 i have which has a busted transport, but i’d like to understand what has gone wrong. luckily i haven’t swapped...

244 track 3 won’t record or playback (remix mode) at volume.

i’ll do this when i get home. it’s def my fault for muddying the water, considering i do post rapidly whenever some issue arises with my units. when doing the tape out test, is doing 2 at a time suitable? my interface only has 2 inputs and i’ve only got rca to trs cables with 2 inputs per cable.

244 track 3 won’t record or playback (remix mode) at volume.

after reading other threads, i tried routing a recorded signal on channel 1 and 2 into track 3 using panning and record select switches, and the signal made it onto track 3 fine but channel 3 still will not amplify it well. this tells me the problem is in the amplification circuit (or whatever...

244 track 3 won’t record or playback (remix mode) at volume.

also, it seems when i max out the faders, the other vu meters (1, 2, and 3) just jump and stay still in the red like there’s some sort of loud sound going through them. it happens at the cusp of 10 on the channel 3 fader, and the audio from channel 3 jumps from barely audible to a bit audible...

244 track 3 won’t record or playback (remix mode) at volume.

i’ve already flipped around the cassette and used different tapes, so i’m certain it’s an issue with channel 3 on the unit and not a tape track problem.

244 track 3 won’t record or playback (remix mode) at volume.

i had a dbx 4 channel unit drop by about a foot and a half into the transport. it looked like it hit right on the edge of the unit, right underneath the transport door button. it freaked me out, but when i went to play back and move around the cassette i had inside the 244, it was still moving...

244 track 3 won’t record or playback (remix mode) at volume.

interestingly, it’s not that the fader needs to be high up to hear anything because of a low volume. there’s just simply no volume until the channel faster is about halfway between above unity and the top of the fader, or between 9 and 10.

244 track 3 won’t record or playback (remix mode) at volume.

it almost seems as though it’s having trouble amplifying whatever is going into channel 3 on every mode except cue, and when in cue it’ll only play what has already been recorded.

244 track 3 won’t record or playback (remix mode) at volume.

so i was minding my business today, recording on the 244, and it sounded great. an hour ago, something dropped near the transport and i was freaked out but it looked like everything was fine. meter 3 wasn’t moving on playback (remix mode), but it had been having that problem anyways for months...

tascam 38 and m512: very quiet tape playback

now that the tape is working a lot better, i believe the clogged head was what it was. it took about 5 q tips before they started coming back white. and yes, i’m 10000% sure my tape is on the right side. smooth, shiny brown side towards the heads, and the matte black side towards the tires.

tascam 38 and m512: very quiet tape playback

my bad once again. i think too narrowly about this stuff. and yes, i’m using the PGM outs to get the signal to the tape recorder. i do run the tape machine outs through the meter bridge upper rca connections (EXT IN), which then run an rca-to-rca snake from the meter bridge outs (FLB) to the...

tascam 38 and m512: very quiet tape playback

i’m not sure if it’s been calibrated, i’m assuming it has considering the dude i bought it from told me it was serviced. it uses ATR mastering tape, which is the tape he gave me and the tape he said it was calibrated to use. the sync mode is something i learned today, and i’m starting to hear my...

tascam 38 and m512: very quiet tape playback

sorry for the confusion. the way i hooked up my unit, track 3 on tape and track 3 on the mixer are one and the same. at least, that’s how i’ll use it. but, i think the results of the clearer sound is the fact that after that initial head cleaning, i got bored and just started listening to music...

tascam 38 and m512: very quiet tape playback

okay wait… just ran a test on track 3. my voice was A LOT louder than it has been every other time. i did also just mute every aux except the channel im listening to.

yep. but it gets noticeably clearer sounding, just more high frequency information.

tascam 38 and m512: very quiet tape playback

as i’m reading the user manual for the m512, the patching scheme that i lifted from the manual makes it seem like there’s some extra patching adjustment or device needed to “remix” in this patching scheme. does that mean that i’m set up to track instead of listen back to the tape deck in that...

tascam 38 and m512: very quiet tape playback

yes, i see meter activity but it is very faint. much less activity than both the console and decks vu activity while tracking. it was a blank tape, an ATR master tape. the guy who sold me the deck said the company who serviced it told him to always use ATR master tape, so unless they knew...
