My recordings lack pleasing vocal tone.
I record different men & women usually using a C414 ULS which is a bit too nuetral in most cases for many singers. Also use a Baby Bottle but I find it's got a slightly brittle midrange in comparison and distorts quicker then the C414, so I'm thinking...
TapeOp reviewed it this month and seemed to say that it's very similar to Red's Type A mic but with a fuller range and then said that the Type A mic had a nicer top end than the Neumann CMV 563. Kind of odd considering that the Type B is $450 new and the CMV 563 is about $1k+ used.
So what...
Here's what I'm looking for: a compressor/limiter around $200 that I can send an entire pop/rock mix through from an analog mixer's stereo outputs to a CD burner's inputs that will allow maximum audio volume before allowing the CD burner to clip - all while keeping the signal clean/uncolored...
Yesterday I recorded a female vocalist (standing just over a foot from a C414mic with pop filter>Avalon M5 pre>RNCcomp>ADAT) and repeatedly heard what sounded like digital distortion spikes during her vocal phrases. I was loosing my head over the sound because all the levels checked out and I...
I'm looking into my first computer-based recording setup with a $3k budget. I have mild computer experience so building a computer is not an option for me. The purchase must include computer, interface & software - basically a whole computer recording setup.
This will be used for recording...
I currently have a single LX20 that's been a perfect match for my small home/semi commercial studio and have been eyeing the Alesis HD24xr as it could add many more tracks for $2k and appears to be much more reliable over time compared to tape-based ADATs.
But... I'm not sure yet. There are...
The Alesis HD24xr is selling for under $2k right now. So I'm thinking it's worth the jump from my current 8-track ADAT in that it will give many more tracks in a reliable package. But I don't want to jump in before getting some outside opinions.
What other options/format's are available for...
I'm aware that kick drum mic polls have been around lately but they've specified that they're for click-heavy kick mics for heavy metal/prog music.
I would like to know what kick drum mic you've had direct experience with that you feel can best handle many types of music: pop, country, indie...
I've started looking at used mixing boards as well as new. Anyone had experince with a Soundcraft 200 series? The specific board I'm looking at is the S200 16 channel. I beleive they were made in the 1980's.
I figure it would be worth it if the cost is low enough; then there would be...
Soundcraft M Series or Allen & Heath MixWizard? Or something else?
I've got a single ADAT setup currently using a Mackie 1202VZLpro. The preamps are pretty good but I'd like to upgrade to a mixer with better EQ (the 1202 is harsh) and more Aux sends for effects at mixdown (the 1202 has two...
I hooked up my Roland Octapad PAD-80 to an R5 drum machine after 3 years of no use and... no go.
Here are the steps I took to set it up. Did I miss anything? The R5 works fine alone so I'm assuming it's the PAD-80, I can't figure out why they won't communicate:
1. When I hit the PAD-80 with...

I'm loosing it on this one. I've been struggling for nearly a year to get good bass tone for recording from a Fernandez jazz bass & Danelectro Longhorn and I've never been happy with the results. Then I recorded a band whose bassist just bought a new Rickenbacher bass for $1200. We recorded...
Howdy. Please advise the following, or whatever else comes to mind:
1. Are the lyrics clear and easy to understand?
2. How's the bass?
3. Anything out of tune?
4. Anything annoying or stand out too much?

"Not Much Company"
Recorded on an ADAT with a...
I'm recording an indie/folk band this weekend with a drummer that has a small drum kit. We're recording the drums alone. I've already got a clue as to which mics I'd use for what and where I'd use compression but I'd like to get some other opinions to find out if I've overlooked anything...
Is there any difference between recording bass with the PODxt and with the POD that's made for bass? Pretty much the same thing with different presets or a whole other animal?
You know, it's embarrassing to post this song for review compared to some of the excellent recordings posted in this forum. My excuse is that it was recorded on one ADAT with a Mackie 1202 and everything was done by one sloppy musician :)

My main concern is that...
I used a program called 'CDex' to convert the finnished CD of this song to MP3 and the MP3 ended up sounding plain nasty - on the high end in particular. Please give a listen and advise if I converted the file improperly(?) or if there is a better free program such as CDex on the net for...
Having phase reversal is important when using multiple mics - so why is it that so many mixers do not have this ability? Am I just missing the mixers that do offer it - and if so, are there any 16 channel mixers that offer phase reversal on multiple channels?
