It can. Not really. The way they work and what they do is different. In basic terms, compressors make loud things quieter and quiet things louder relatively and EQ adjusts the amount of a frequency that is present (over to you Rob for a proper explanation!). I'll get back to you when I can...

I agree with Rob that using a compressor to adjust dynamics on a classical recording where the players have studied for years to get their dynamics perfected is a really bad idea. You could try dynamic inverse EQ matching (gently at max -1db, tight Q) sidechained to the vocal to get the vocal...

Put a compressor on the bass track, sidechain it to the kick track, fastish attack and release. Push the threshold until you get around -10db of compression to hear what it sounds like then adjust to taste. PUMPING bass.

Been there, done that! I didn't love the bass and if it were my project I would probably re-track it and I'd redo the vocal with you a few inches further from the mic. I like the song and I would keep it simple with a light touch.

This actually sounds better than your EQ'd version which you're over doing/over thinking. Get the levels sorted and you'll find a VERY light touch will get this sorted.
