The Drum Bubble - Leaks in my space

Thanks, Dave. My door, which is already built and installed, has something similar to yours. There are rollers top and bottom that press the door into the seal as it closes. Friction is a bit of a problem, but not a deal breaker once the rollers are adjusted. My door is also light tight. It’s...

The Drum Bubble - Leaks in my space

If I could get some opinions I want to improve the leakage into my granddaughter’s living room. Her wall is a standard 2x4 wall with r13 and faces the bubble with a 2” gap. I have pieces of 5/8” that I can add to the bubble wall that faces her living room. Should I add 2” of rockwool before or...

The Drum Bubble - Leaks in my space

A couple questions: is chipboard the same as OSB? What thickness? What is the composition of the underlay? By any chance are there any data about how well that works? Thanks! Mike

The Drum Bubble - Leaks in my space

I thought about that when I built it. I read somewhere that the net gain is next to nothing but you can’t believe everything you read. Believe it or not, I can get under there because it’s not bolted to the floor. It’s freestanding. During the build, I had the unit out 2’ from the walls...

The Drum Bubble - Leaks in my space

I will definitely do that sweep, although I’m pretty sure all I’m going to find is that low frequency resonance. I used acoustic sealant at every layer and staggered all the drywall seams and then there’s the green glue creating a gasket over the whole structure, so I’m pretty confident about...

The Drum Bubble - Leaks in my space

Thank you for all those excellent suggestions. Looks like I have misunderstood the STC calculation and I just read that it doesn’t mean much anyway for a real world result. The way I did the test is the most valid, setting up a sound source inside the space and measuring the DB outside the...

The Drum Bubble - Leaks in my space

I would do that but, I’m in south central Florida and even in the winter my garage is 80-90 degrees. In the summer? Forget about it. It often hits 100 and higher.

The Drum Bubble - Leaks in my space

I have finished my “Drum Bubble” aside from a few details. Recap: it is a 2”x4” framed structure 7’x9’x8’. Ceiling is 16” on center, walls are 24” on center, safe & sound rock wool in the bays. It is built as a room-in-a-room in my garage on concrete slab with a 2” space between the structure...

The Drum Bubble - Leaks in my space

The gaps will not stand! I will furiously fight them to the death! Well, maybe not death but I will prevail. Being trapped is a real danger and changed my design. Originally, I intended to have a series of clamps on the inside that would pull the door tight into the seal. But if I had a heart...

The Drum Bubble - Leaks in my space

Hey thanks for the comment. Too late I already built a 300 pound slab ?

The Drum Bubble - Leaks in my space

The rollers press the seals together. But it’s not perfect. The seals are made from strips of mass loaded vinyl which is a good material, but it does not compress and therefore there are small gaps of 1/32” or so in various places across the seal, because the mating surfaces are not perfectly...

The Drum Bubble - Leaks in my space

Hey thanks for reading and commenting. I researched all those things pretty thoroughly. I tossed the hat channel because I only have a 7’x9’ space. I did do the room-in-a-room so I’m not concerned with transmission into the house or out to the street. Hopefully. Tests are yet to be done. The...

The Drum Bubble - Leaks in my space

Working on the seal the last two days and I’m giving up on the MLV strips. It’s very unforgiving, or rather it requires two near perfectly flush surfaces to create a good seal. I’m working with plain old lumber so it doesn’t have those. Gaps and friction are preventing the door from moving and...

The Drum Bubble - Leaks in my space

Thank you. The screw issue is not one I thought about, admittedly. But I probably wouldn’t have done anything differently even if I had known about it. Glueing double 5/8” sheet rock to the ceiling obviously won’t work. If a screw is transmitting, how much more would the much larger surface...

The Drum Bubble - Leaks in my space

Not so fast my friend! My design is pretty good, not perfect, but it will be effective. It’s not done yet. I don’t think you’ve understood my design. There is no gap, all four edges of the door seal against the face of the structure and on the edges of the door. The rollers press the seals...

The Drum Bubble - Leaks in my space

I had the same suspicions but thought I would share it anyway. It would be useful to know what the db loss for drywall screws really is.

The Drum Bubble - Leaks in my space

Sure I want to hear it! I incorporated some similar ideas into my door. It rolls, sliding door fashion, into a series of adjustable rollers that force the seals together. The door weighs about 300 pounds so a hinge is not workable. I attached some pics. It’s still under construction, so it’s...

The Drum Bubble - Leaks in my space

In regard to the screws, here is an interesting product you may be aware of: “In lab tests with traditional drywall panels, researchers claim Sound Screws reduced through-the-wall sound levels by 9 decibels, which worked out to about half the perceived sound when traditional screws were used.”...

The Drum Bubble - Leaks in my space

No room for a second door or money. All I had to work with was a 7’x9’ space in my garage, just big enough to hold my drum kit. I used contact cement on strips of MLV and that seems to be holding well, but it’s early, I only just built the thing.
