Balanced or unbalanced jacks on units where it doesn't specify

I have a few older units in my rack and can't find info in the manuals about whether or not the 1/4" connections are balanced or unbalanced. I was hoping I could find an easy way to tell without having to open them up (I'd have to take them out of the rack), and I saw this on a forum...

    Typical 80s sequenced synth workflow?

Curious if anyone has any insight on this. I've gotten into synths a good bit over the past 10 years (guitar is my main instrument), and I've been curious about the typical workflow that bands used in the 80s for a song with a prominent synth track, whether it's a bass line, arpeggios, etc...

    help needed: Yamaha MT4x v. Tascam PS414

Haha ... I had missed the date until baleutes asked how it was. Then I looked back and saw 1999. Holy crap; I think that's gotta be the oldest thread revive I've ever seen!

Name - Goo Goo Dolls - cover -

I don't really have any mixing nits. It sounds pretty nice to me. Great job overall. The only criticism I have is just more of a philosophical one, I guess - that being that it sounds so much like the original. In other words, it doesn't really distinguish itself from the original and bring...

    Another small acoustic mix

And now I see in the first post you mention it was a friend's song. SMH. Sorry about that! ?

    Another small acoustic mix

Oh ... I didn't know this was a cover; I thought it was an original. If that's the case, disregard my comments about the melody. Sorry about that!

    Another small acoustic mix

Nice tune. IMHO, the lyrics are very nice, but they aren't fully done justice by the melody, which kind of seemed like an afterthought almost. This was most evident in the second half of the phrases, which just hung out on the same note the whole time ("I did not know how to respond," etc.)...

    Monterey Jack -Final Mix-

As others have mentioned, great playing throughout, and the recording is very nice as well. It was an enjoyable listen. My only nit is that it kind of got a little monotonous after a bit. I would have enjoyed a hummable melody or a more noticeable identifiable hook somewhere. But overall...

Resurrection of The Old Barn Band

Hmmm .. went to check out the new mix on the Soundclick page, and it wouldn't play for me. I hit play, and it just sits there. MySpace has does the same thing for years now (the few times that I've actually been on there). I think I heard it's because MySpace still uses Flash to play; I wonder...

Forming this ball of clay - scratch demo

Sounds nice so far. Definite "Can't Find My Way Home" vibe there for a second, and then a Supertramp vibe (with the D shape chords moved up over the open D string) right after that. Keep working on it!

    4 U

Everything sounds pretty good overall. Nice job. The only thing I noticed is that the vocal breaths are EXTREMELY loud. I don't know if that's on purpose or not, but I found it pretty distracting. In fact, at first, I thought it was maybe just a sample added in until I heard it stop once you...

Can the Tascam Model 24 make a good recording?

I was able to sync two ADATs without issue in the late 90s. I don't know if three makes it harder, but we had no issues syncing our two, FWIW.

    Going DAW-less

You mention the fact that it's a Portastudio as if that's a detractor somehow. I'm not sure what you mean. Why is the Tascam Model 24 not a good DAW-less option?

Resurrection of The Old Barn Band

Great job, very cool groove, and great performances all around. Really the only thing that bugs me is the vocal treatment. They don't seem to mesh with the rest of the mix very well, IMO. They don't seem to be in the same "space" as the rest of the band. That's just my .02, obviously.

In Need Of Advice/Help With My Mix

Most of it has been covered. Nice tune. The tuning on the vocals gets a bit sketchy on the high falsetto parts, especially when you very first start going up there. I would suggest trying to tame the wobbly, quivery vibrato on the vocals a bit. (I know this is not a mixing fix.) You have a nice...

    Get High

Overall it's a nice mix. The excessive autotune on the vocals isn't my cup of tea at all, but I know lots of people do it. The hi-hat sound overly crispy. The verb on the vocal is kind of all-consuming. It sounds as though it could be hi-passed a bit more. It's really present and taking up a...

"Sooner or Later" (Climate change warning)

Again, there's some excessive brightness going on, most noticeably the hi-hats and cymbals. It's a little piercing. As Dung mentioned, the vocal timing gets off at times. Rushing pretty badly in some spots. Great bass line! Great groove it slips into around the 4:30 mark. It seems the piano...

    Still alive and well

AWESOME guitar tone! You did a great job finding the really exciting frequencies that make it come alive. Nice bass and vocals as well. The whole thing has a great sense of energy to it. My only critique is that there's some rushing here and there - in the vocals at times and the guitar as well...
