I'm trying to get a volunteer position at a small campus radio station. I think I've got enough experience with studio gear to drop right in to the radio station environment. But I have to pass a test on the technology and I'm worried there might be some stuff I've never heard of on there. Do...
I need to get a great trumpet sound, but I've no trumpet, nor a trumpet player to help me achieve it. So I'musing a trumpet patch on my electronic piano that is fairly authentic-sounding. I want to make the trumpet command the mix, sort of the way vocals do in a pop song, but not too distracting...
The other day I received a few reels of RMG LPR35 in the mail :D
Having access only to sheddy Ampex 457 since I got in to analog recording, I was really excited to try this tape out. I threaded up and started recording some solo piano just to test it out. Everything sounded great, but there...
After weeks of waiting my MRL calibration tape has finally arrived!
I threaded up my R8, and began adjusting the REP CAL setting. About halfway through the ritual I noticed this:
The tape seems to be shedding worse than my Ampex 457 tapes. Has anyone else experienced this with a new MRL tape...
Because I am too skint to buy a 2-track open reel machine, I use a cassette deck to record my finished mixes. I'm noticing a lot of flutter on the recordings. I know cassettes are far from a great recording medium, but this is an unacceptable amount of flutter. I tried recording some solo piano...
In my quest to align my R8, I have come to an issue. I've set the REC CAL level on each card to the proper level, and now it's time to adjust the METER CAL parameter so that all the meters read 0 when a -10dBV signal is encountered. For some reason the Fostex engineers put the METER CAL knob on...
Today I noticed my R8 is out of alignment. Track 2 sounds faint but present on track 1, and the same with track 3 on 2, 4 on 3, etc.
Taking a look at the path, I noticed the tape sits a little too high. I have no clue how to fix this though, since the service manual is hard to come by. Can...
I don't really need a 4-track cassette machine, but since I have a bunch of crappy type 1 cassettes lying around I figure I could put them to use. Someone is selling a Fostex 4-Tracker on kijiji, but they didn't post the model number, nor any details, just this picture.
Can anyone identify this...
Just bought one of these Marantz 5025B cassette decks on eBay. It seems to be in perfect condition, but I won't know until it arrives later this week.
How are these Marantz units? Can I expect some decent sounding cassettes?
I've been looking for a replacement cassette deck since my Akai GXC-704D is broken beyond cost-effective repair. I found an ad for a Yamaha KX-670 deck in the local paper, $75. It seems like a quality deck. Three heads, bias adjustment, 'closed loop dual capstan'...
Has anyone had experience...
I picked up an AKAI GXC-704D cassette deck for free from a friend. The unit seems to function. The transport is fine, it records and plays well, though I've only tested it with old consumer-quality Maxell tape. Anyways, I noticed that the input level knob seems to have no effect on the VU meters...
... that when I recorded some piano music, the playback was virtually inaudible  I was just recording with the machine yesterday and it was fine, but today I had to scrub away for five minutes! It sounds brilliant now, though.
I'll definitely be cleaning after every session from now on...
I've been looking in to ordering some tape from RMGI. I need 7" reels of 1/4" tape, but the hub type is throwing me off. I don't want NAB or AEG, but the other option is called trident. I've never heard of a trident hub. Is this the format that will fit on a Fostex R8?
I'm thinking of buying a Mackie mixer, but I don't need the latest and greatest. So I went to eBay and there are some good deals. However, if I buy one it will have to travel from the lower USA to Canada, and probably face rough abuse on the way.
Has anyone shipped a mixer before? I've received...
Could some one explain to me, in as much detail as possible, what split monitoring is? I understand that it's useful for mixing pre-recorded material with live instruments, but I know there must be more to it than that.
I've gotten a few opportunities at buying a Fostex R8, but I'm hesitant because it only uses 1/4" tape for 8 tracks. Right now I can spend $350 for an R8, or $700 for a Teac 80-8, but is double the track width worth double the price tag?
I'm thinking about moving away from my digital rig and buying a 16x4 mixer and a multitrack casette recorder, or reel-to-reel if I can find one.
Anyways, I was wondering where to find more information on analog recording and how all the devices work together. I'm so used to having all the...
