Laptop Choices - Recording a Secondary Concern

I have had good luck with Dell in my professional career, and my wife has had several Dell laptops. The laptop I bought for myself in 2022 was about $1500 and is a Dell xps-15 with an I-7 processor, I maxed out the RAM at 32 GB and 1 TB SSD. It currently has Win 10 Pro and I am not planning to...

do i really need an expensive guitar

If you can afford an expensive guitar and want it, then buy it. I've noticed the person playing the guitar has a lot more to do with how it sounds than the cost.

    Typical bedroom hobbyist mix

MA, I agree with Grim. Someone that knows what they are doing might be able to shed some light on what is right and wrong to help you understand what you are hearing. I don't have the best setup and I am a work in progress for playing, recording, and mixing. I just keep working on a mix and...

Manslick - There was a dude

I was listening with earbuds on my laptop. I don't know if it was mono, shouldn't have been unless the recording was. If you put up a revised version I will give it another listen.

    When is enough, ENOUGH?

I used to get the "why do you need that one, what does it do that the others don't?" when I would buy something I had more than one of. Well, my wife is a geologist and has a rock collection. Years ago I went to a rock and mineral show with her. She was showing me this rock and telling me how...

Manslick - There was a dude

No, it could come up a db or so. No, some of the lyrics are very soft and I could not understand them. When I have this problem, I either manually do volume automation on the vocal track, or do it with Melodyne if the vocal needs other processing. Not really. Hard to say on the other items...

Thoughts on what to do with this track?

What do you not like? I think it sounds fine but there is a lot going on. I'm listening on ear buds and the thing that is annoying to me, is a periodic drone in the background. I can't tell if it's a bass or a rhythm guitar. Maybe simplifying (thinning) the mix will open it up.

Some things to think about when choosing mics.

I also have a V67G, hard not to like a less than $100 mic that sounds good! I bought it after seeing Harvey's test of cheap mics and used it for several years and still have it. Now I have a NT1 as my primary vocal mic, and have also used it to record acoustic guitar. I'm very happy with the NT1...

Microphone Preamplifier Design Theory and Discussion

Glad to hear that. I had cataract surgery about 8 years ago and went from 2/400 and 20/600 to 20/20 in both eyes. They can really can do amazing things these days. Good luck!

Preamps. What mic preamps are you using? Discuss them.

I really like the song Rich. How are you recording the guitar? I assume stereo pair, if so, what is the mic placement? I have the same mics (M5s and NT1) and I haven't tried a stereo pair yet.

Here is a rough mix of a tune I’m working on. Mix Feedback appreciated! Just posted new mix.

I like the song. The two things I didn't like were the vocal panned right, I think it would have been better centered, and the guitar panned left was a little loud. The vocal level seemed a little low, but that could had been from the panning.

A new fake mic from China - this time, the Beta 58

I worked for a large automotive electronics company with a manufacturing plant in CN. After visiting our plant and speaking to our engineers and vendors, I can tell you without a doubt, that virtually every manufacturer in CN will make parts for you, on your tooling, and turn around and sell the...

    Free alternative to Melodyne

Practice makes perfect. Just practice singing any time you can, and a wide variety of different songs. It will improve your vocal abilities and range. Up until a few years ago, I never sang, I just played guitar. Then I got interested in writing songs and performing covers of songs I like...

    Free alternative to Melodyne

Reaper comes with a plugin called "ReaTune" that works pretty good if you don't need to do any major editing. I used it for a while before I bought Melodyne.

    Better laptop

Max out the ram. I went from 16 to 32 in my Dell, and it made a big difference.

    It turned out silly again..

You just have to find your vocal niche Lazer. A few weeks ago, someone posted a cover of You Wear It Well by Rod Stewart that needed a vocal. I think you might do OK on that.

I like it, I kept waiting for the vocals.

    2008 Martin D28 - horrible resonances

Me too. I got one of the super cheap (free) Rogue guitars Guitar Center was giving away when you bought a 12 pack of D'addario strings, and much to my surprise, it sounds really good! I have a couple of Guild D-25's and I really like the way they sound, but the Rogue was a pleasant surprise.
