I Just Got A 16 Track Reel To Reel!

I have just finished at my school/college I have been attending for the past 5 years, and popping down to the Recording studio just to say goodbye to my old music teacher we started talking about some of our old recordings. He suggested I take the old Fostex Reel-to-Reel home and record some of...

    Dashboard Confessional tunings

I haven't had a chance to sit down and work down any Dashboard stuff yet, but a mate of mine has said that each song uses a different tuning. Anyone seen the guy live? Or can play any of the songs? It would seem a bit wack if he would use really odd tunings for all his songs. Has anyone...

Later with Jools Holland, 6th June

Anyone see this on the BBC in the UK? There was an amazing classical acoustic player, amazing player. Had two leads coming out of his guitar into a mixer (Soundcraft). One looked like it was an XLR lead, while the other was probably a jack lead. Anyone know what these leads would be for...

Joe Meek JM27 vs. Audio Technica ATR 25

With the introduction of the JM27 in the UK in the coming weeks, I was wondering how people feel it compares to the ATR 25. They seem to be the only SD condensers under £100 I can find in the UK. Does anyone else know of any other half decent SD condensers available in the UK at a similar...

    DI boxes - tech question

A DI box is basicly a transformer right? To change the voltage on a signal so that it is higher, therefore making a lower impedance. Okay..... I got that. I took an old passive DI box of mine apart ad found there was other things on the circuit board other than the transformer - does anyone...

    Condensor Microphone theory

Something that has been buggin me for a while.... In a standard Capacitor, there is a a non-conducting material between the positive and negative plates - in a Condensor Microphone is this the air? Or is there something other than air that allows the capacitance? (Mylar?) I would have...

    Yamaha MSP3's

These are only £189 - not much more than the Tannoy Reveal Passives, except they're Active. http://www.digitalvillage.co.uk/aproduct.asp?ProductID=2384 Makes me wonder, thats pretty cheap....... Are they gonna have that much of a flat response? I was gonna get the Tannoy reveals passives, but...

    PZM's as overheads?

Has anyone ever used PZM mic's as overheads before? I was wondering because (by my understanding) PZM capsules are Condensor capsules, but mounted in a particular way to create the pressure zone. If not Oerheads, are there any other applications where they might be useful? Neil

    Fostex 812

I'm currently using a Behringer MX2004a mixer, but have the opportunity to buy one of these Mixers cheaper than what I paid for the Behringer only 6 months ago. Has anyone had any experience with this mixer and is it any good as an upgrade from the Behringer? It has direct outs which is better...

    Fostex 812

I'm a Newbie to this forum - I've not used a piece of Fostex gear as yet (a mate has a fostex 8 track though which is pretty good appparantly). However, I have just had an offer of buying a Fostex 812 mixer. At the moment I'm using a Behringer MX2004a - will this be much of an upgrade? It...

    overheads - B1 or ECM8000?

I already own a SP B1, and am lookign into getting some condensor mics for drum overheads. Should I buy another B1 (£67 in the UK) or buy a pair of ECM8000's (£35 UK)? I've heard a lot of people speak favourably of the MXL SD condensors, but these are over £100 each and hard to find over...

punk/emo/pop/hardcore maybe? tell me what you think.

Some MP3's at last! There a band called No Skill Required from the Isle of Wight in the UK. I think they're influences are probably the Atari's and The Starting Line. My influences (as you can probably hear) are Trombino and Tom Lord Algae...

    Tenacious D acoustic sound

How si it they get such a nice acoustic sound on stage? I've seen them and there acoustics sound a million times better than mine, even when I have it running through the POD and tweaked as far as it will go. They seem to have this sweet, crisp yet full sound to their guitars. Anyone know how?

    how would you do this........?

I am to be recording a 7-piece saxaphone band in teh next couple of weeks and I am slightly confused as to how to do it. I've recorded sax's seperatly loads and loads of times before, but these guys play together, not to a click or drums, etc, that I can record before. I usually use e604's...

Where to buy pickups in the UK?

I've just got my hands on an Epiphone SG Junior - one of my favourite guitars of all time, and I'm looking to maybe replace the P90 on the bridge. I used WD Music to buy a pickup once and they were very good - I've lost their catalogue though and their website is down. Does anyone in the UK...

    Bass Master K

Anyone heard any news on Bass Master K? He used to be the fountain of all knowledge when it came to Cubase. He seems to have dissappeared in the past month or two. Where has he gone?!

    clipping with no boosting

I have just had a chance to use my new kick drum mic - a Sennheiser MD21u. I positioned it about an inch from the beater head to get that punchy kick sound. OMG! It was peaking with no any sort of boosting (pre-amplifying)! I had to move it a little away from the head to stop the clipping...
