    Big/large solid body guitar suggestions??

Solid body guitars tend to NOT be large because of the weight factor so I can't think of any that would be large like a semi or full hollow. There are lots of semi and full hollow guitars so it would be helpful to know what type of music it will be used for. All the big names make them.

Is the meaning of a song important to you ?

There are songs that have lyrics that I don't care for and then there are songs with lyrics that are offensive. In the first case I will listen if the music is good. In the second case I will not listen even if the music is good.

Studiologic numa x gt ...as a MIDI controller?

I'm not familiar with the Numa X but I have one of the very inexpensive Nektar MIDI keyboard controllers and the mod wheel works fine. I've had the Nektar for over a year and I've had no issues at all using it with my DAW and virtual instruments.

    Ear for guitar

There are quite a few well known guitars that have a recognizable sound and I can tell them apart easily if they are played clean (ish) through the same amp with the same basic settings. Start jacking with the controls and adding distortion and all bets are off.

    Keepin Time?

I can keep the beat with both but it's just easier to use the left when the guitar is resting on the right leg. That said I have trouble keeping a steady beat with my left foot while playing drums but have no problem with the right. Years ago I was in a band with an awesome drummer who almost...

Shotgun Microphones - frequency response plots and comments

Your testing rig is quite fascinating. My approach to searching for a mic is very low tech and I think similar to many. Read reviews, buy mic, test mic, sell mic, and repeat until I find one that works. I'm fairly happy with what I have currently so I haven't bought any in a while but even with...

    Using limiters on drums

Keep in mind that the OP was recording drums to two tracks (stereo) tape so compressing and limiting post would be affecting the whole kit.

    recording acoustic guitar

At one time I used to record with Shure dynamic mic's because it was all I had but now I use either a large or small diameter condensers because they pickup more of the subtle frequencies that I like. I would rather have more to work with and filter out what I don't want with high/low pass and...

    Going DAW-less

Dave, you do make a good point, just not what the response the OP is looking for. IMO, cost is not a good argument to justify going DAW less since my entire recording system costs a lot less than what I could get a complete DAW less system for, plus I would need to hire a tech to keep it...

    Going DAW-less

Whatever system inspires you and gets the job done is the best. Being that you are an electronics tech it makes sense that you like older gear that you can service.

    electric guitar pickups

I use L500's in two of my lap steel guitars and they are brighter sounding than 57's. I've had 57's before and didn't find them to be particularly bright TBH. You can also experiment with a different pot and cap to get more brightness which would be way cheaper than new pickups.

    SG Strap Button Relocation?

If you really hate the neck dive.... then yes in the case of an SG. I have also seen versions with two holes and the OP already drilled one hole so why not two if it solves his problem? If that idea is offensive there's always this:

    Recording setup - microphone holder

I use a small boom stand made for micing a guitar cab and I set it on a stool, table top or any surface that will work. I also set it on the floor for micing acoustic guitars or percussion while sitting. Very portable and easy to stash.

    Equipment Question

I switched from open reel recorders to DAW about 15 years ago and never looked back. Like @TalismanRich said, there are some who still prefer hardware recorders so that's something only you can decide. I use a laptop with Reaper so my system is quite portable and I move it around on a regular...
