So for now I'm not messing with trying to calibrate my machine right now since I'm waiting to get a milivolt meter, and my machine already sounds friken sweet and doubt I'll be able to hear a difference even when I do get around to calibrating it, so I've started to play around with recording...
But I've set up a 4 foot cube as an isolation booth. Yes, onyl 4 feet wide, 4 feet across, and 4 feet HIGH. :D
I'm using it only for guitar. It works out nicely actually as far as I can tell. I can sit down and have just enough room to play my guitar "comfortably" with a stereo micing setup...
ok so I'm TRYING to start calibration.
it tells me when I'm setting the repro level to set it so the voltmeter reads +4dbm. The machine is a +4 dbm machine, even though it is unbalanced. Now I'm confused. Is the +4 that I'm supposed to set the repro level to because the machine is a +4...
So I found a good looking voltmeter that reads in milivolts on ebay, but it says it's frequancy range is 40-400 Hz, and I would be measuring a 1000hz tone. So does that mean I shouldn't buy the meter?
And really doesn't have much to do with mics, but there is no specific place to put this, and lots of people here seem to know what they're talking about, so I'll ask:
Ok, I need to read the voltage of a signal coming out of my computer.(Soundcards have a -10 db output right? Unbalanced stereo...
I don't really get these things. So if I'm measuring the current out of like an amp or something, I don't get any reading. Why? Is it because I need a meter that reads in smaller units? Oh, and how would I measure the current off of an unbalanced cord? If there's only a positive and a ground...
When puting on fabric (is thin bedsheets ok?) should I wear gloves, lots of cloths? Is it ok to do in a garage? I handled them a little today with no protection and I feel a piece of fiberglass in my hand. It's no big deal, I can't notice it much, but yeah, suggestions would be be great!
I've been looking in my manual and it says to adjust my input and vu meter levels, I need an oscillator that can read -18db. I'm not all too familiar with oscillators, do all or most of them have a knob that I can use to find the specific db that I need it to be at? Any suggestions? Thanks!
man I tried demaging my machine for the first time today, it was scary. And I don't know if I did it ok or not. I turned it on like 6 feet away, moved slowly towards the heads, then did these little circles near and parallel to the surfaces of the heads. And I think I may have done th cirles too...
Today I put a tape on top of a monitor(speaker, not comp mon.) and then thought of the effect it will have on my tape, if any, since speakers have magnets in them. And what about dynamic mics, they have magnets in them etc. How careful do I want to be with this kind of thing?
So today was a good day. Not only did I get that part I REALLY needed for my Fender Rhodes, I got my MRL tape. I finally broke down and bought one for the full 140. It was cool though, I live only about 40 minutes northwest of MRL, so instead of paying for shipping and waiting anxiously for it...
I tried recording a tambourine with my Hamburg (condenser) and it sounded just wrong.....It sounded as if there was a. tambourine b. rocks being chucked at the mic.
I tried using an sm57 and that seemed to help......Anyone know what I'm talking about?
So I live near San Fransisco......Yesterday I was driving down to San Jose and saw these builidings and their huge sign said AMPEX. I don't follow this kind of thing, but didn't Quantegy buy them out? If Ampex is still going, what do they do now? No one seems to be making any reel to reel...

that isn't me selling, I've already got two, but I just thought I'd share, cause that's a pretty darn good deal, and I LOVE my Hamburgs....... I...
So as many know, I've got 2 mx5050 1/2" 8 tracks. I now know how to use it decently, and was able for the first time to have it linked to some decent stuff. I went from an ADK Hamburg (300 bucks) to a DMP3 pre (160) to the recorder, and man, when I played back me saying "testing, 1 2 3 testing"...
Fist off, I'd like to thank everyone whos helped me start to get the calibration process, it's all slooooowly coming into focus.
So let me get this strait. The VU meter= Signal of MRL tape-Signal of tape going to be used.
So if I get an MRL tape recorded at 0 DB and use 456, that's 0-6, so I...
the only guitar amp I have is a practice one that came with my cheap guitar. It's clean channel is about as clean as a dumpster, it distorts no matter how quet what I'm playing is.
Can anyone give me any recomendations for a tube amp that I could get used for under 300 dollars? Or any guitar...
What's it going for nowadays, for 1" per foot? I found this guy on ebay selling it for nearly a buck per foot which sounds like a complete rip-off, but then again, I have no idea what the prices are.
So I've been looking into calibrating my machine, and I still don't get it fully. So the basic idea is to run a certain signal through the machine, and set the pots on the back so that the vu meters register at a certain value? I know that's a really blunt way to put it, if it's even right, but...
