    building my own XLR cables

I was reading SOMEWHERE about good brands of wire and adapters to make your own XLR wires.... I need to know, because I need 3 snakes, and they have to be wired to pin 3 hot, and would rather make them all myself instead of wasting a bunch of money just to break into them all and reverse pins 2...

A HOORAY & A warning for all those mindless people like me!

So you know how I was all freaked out that BOTH my Otari's were recording bursts of static? And that I was determined to try and fix it myself even though I have no idea how recorders really work, and then Tim and Daniel and David knocked some sense into me and told me to take it to a tech? No...

static in the middle of recording

Man, this is getting annoying. I recorded a guitar part for about 4 minutes. I play it back, and I get a little 1 second part where there's mild static. Then like a minute later, I near it again.......Does anyone have this problem? Even when I'm recording NOTHING (just to erase the tape better)...

    Mic design

I don't get how you tailor a mic to have certian characteristics. Like How does one alter the frequencies? Do certain resistors only effect some frequencies or something? How does this work? Thanks!

    stereo miking accoustic

I'm having a little trouble with this. First I tried some in my bedroom, didn't sound too great, then recorded into a corner of a room, with 703 everywhere. It sounded better, but still not great. I put one mic near the 12th fret, and the other a little off the body's soundhole. I've isolated my...

I feel like I'm giving my baby up for adoption

I WAS going to keep both my Otari's, one for parts as Daniel suggested like foreever ago, but I've come to the conclusion that I am an no position to do such a thing I believe......I've decided to go into a commercial studio to get some tracks like vocals and drums and perhaps more layed down...

    2 questions

    1. I'm having a fun time figuring out adjusting the record bias.......So let me get this straight: It's a really high freq. (in the 100kHz range?) that is mixed in with the audio signal that kind of "loosens up" the magnetic particles on the tape so they can be arragned into the what the audio...

    general electronics troubleshooting

I'm someone that doesn't know much about electronics. How does one troubleshoot an electronics problem? Are there general things you can do to try and isolate the problem?

    aw crap...........

I was messing around with my reel to reel, calibrating it, and my 1st channel doesn't work anymore. I've isolated the problem though, it's in the channel card. It can playback fine, it can play a tone fine, but cannot record......I have no idea what could have happened, it was just working...

    uh oh.

Ok, so no this is not another calibration question , but I did discover the problem whilst adjusting the repro hi freq. level. I noticed when I played back the 10kHz tone off my MRL, after adjusting each level, they were all stable and at 0 VU, except for channel 8. The meter on 8 is...

    Do you think this matters?

Ok, so I've FINALLY got a firm grip on calibration. I have been able to succesfully calibrate the input and VU meter levels. I needed to have an oscillator so I could send both a -18 and -8 dBm 1 kHz tone. I downloaded one, and it didn't say which dB it sent out (dbm, dbv, dbu?) so I just hooked...

    nothing to do with mics

I posted a topic like this a while back, but thought I had solved the problem, but have not......... Ok, so I need to measure the mV coming out of a computers soundcard. I set the multimeter to mV 200 AC. I put the red lead in the red whole, the black lead in the black whole. Without the leads...

    Commercial Studios

Man, I never thought THIS would happen, but I'm thinking of going into a commercial studio to record stuff. I like tinkering around with recording at home, but I'm inexpirienced, and to be honest, all I really want to to do is get my songs on tape, I don't care who records it. I've had these...

    bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I need to know how to adjust action on an accoustic guitar.......Too much buzz. Can I do it, or should I bring it to an expirienced guitar service man? How much do you think that'd cost?

    problem

so I've set up 703 in my closet. There are a few small spaces that are "leaks" into my room. I haven't covered them yet, it's a little harder than you'd expect in my case. Just wondering if that's why it doesn't seem like I'm getting any deadening results, leaks into another room will make the...

    this sucks

I FINALLY got my setup going. And I tried to record accoustic guitar through 2 Hamburgs into a DMP3 into a reel to reel recorder. And it sounded like crap. Then again, I really have no expirience with recording yet, seeing I have just gotten things running together. How much does expirience have...

    Mixing and mastering question

When you mix and master w/ analog equipment, you mix down to a stereo 1/4" then take that tape and master it down to another tape right? So that means you need 2 stereo recorders.....So my question is, are some stereo recorders better than others? I mean, there are so many of them, they all look...

How often should I change my guitar strings?

I've never bothered to thing about that untuill they break, but mine haven't broken at all since I got the guitar, like 6 months ago! So yeah, insight would be good. They sound a little dull and blunt.

Should I be laughing or learning from this?

Out of curiousity, I disected one of my cheap 10 dollar mics. The mic was kind of heavey, so you'd THINK it would be more high quality or something, but turns out, when I opened it up, the only reason it was heavey was because there are a big stone on the inside! Does the rock play any part in...

    How dead to be

When I hear people talking about recording most things, I hear the best thing to do is to make the room as dead as possible. In the Home Recording for Dummies book, Jeff says that too dead is bad and that it's a good idea to liven things up a little bit. Soooooo yeah, you can proabibly see my...
