Money pit but which is less? Own: Fostex R8, Akai MG614. Considering selling for: Tascam 488 MKii .

On the other hand… If you’re thinking you could be happy with cassette 4-track, and you want something more than the MG-614, which I agree is a robust build, but if you want something better in terms of sonics and build quality/reliability, look no further than the Audio Technica AT-RMX64. Yes...

Money pit but which is less? Own: Fostex R8, Akai MG614. Considering selling for: Tascam 488 MKii .

The R8 is always going to sound better than cassette. It’s the same-ish track width as 4-track cassette, but 4x the tape speed than even high-speed cassette. If you stick with cassette and you’re set on 8-track I’d look for a Tascam 238. I don’t like the CR-1604…had one. It’s fine. But it is way...

    Tascam TSR-8 > Tascam 58 > DAW sync

No. Remember: there is only one master in a sync array. So in your case, since you have no hardware that can control the tape machine to keep it locked, your master has to be one of your tape machines. But that automatically puts your other tape machine as a slave. And then we’re right back to...

    Tascam TSR-8 > Tascam 58 > DAW sync

The piece you’re missing is one of the tape machines has to be a slave. In a sync array you have one master, and everything else is a slave. Up until now you’ve had one tape machine as a master, and the computer as the slave. If you add a tape machine to the array it has to be a slave. Now...

We’re alike…I like to learn about different devices, compare them, read the manuals, etc.

    Help identifying capacitors

The tant is likely 1uF/25V. What PCB assembly is it mounted to and what’s the part designator? “C” what? You can always look at the PCB assembly, locate the part identifier and then look at the schematic to cross-reference the values. The ceramic cap I don’t know for sure but probably 470pF...

    Tascam M520 Story...

Yeah I think, compared to the 388 and most smaller format Mackie consoles the M-500 series does offer a good amount of functionality from the control surface…separate trim and connection controls for the various inputs. The other thing I think you’ll find is the M-500 consoles have some really...

    Tascam M-30 Overdubbing Questions

Re-read what I said earlier…and look at the Block Diagram…the headphone level control follows the MONITOR level control. So if you sweep the MONITOR level control off, full CCW, of course the headphone level control will do nothing. I encourage you to do your due-diligence and study the manual...

    Tascam M520 Story...

Ahhhh I’m just glad it was something simple. That’s the best. So do you have the instrument inputs on 1 & 2 connected as line inputs as well? Yes…the TAPE IN jacks are -10dBv line level. And I like your thinking about the two line level inputs and interfacing with the patchbay. It’s similar...

Ahhhh I’m just glad it was something simple. That’s the best outcome. Man I tell ya…I wish I still had an M-500 console on-hand…with the common questions that come up related to these consoles I sometimes wish I could do a follow up or re-do video that highlights some of the common...

    Tascam M520 Story...

Wait…you keep referring to the line inputs…you mean the TAPE IN jacks right? The only line level inputs for channels 3 & 4 are the TAPE IN jacks. The other inputs that are on RCA jacks are phono inputs and would surely distort with any line level source.

Is the signal distorted at the ACCESS SEND jack with sources connected to the MIC or LINE inputs, or is it only one or the other?

    Tascam M520 Story...

Quick and easy check is to exercise the SEND/RCV jumpers on channels 3 & 4. If that doesn’t help then start sniffing the signal along the input channel path to see where it breaks down. Start with the ACCESS SEND jack…is the signal good there? If so check the signal quality when monitoring one...

Power cable for Tascam M 520?

You beat me to it. I was going to draw your attention to historic posts about this method. It’s not elegant but it works. Hardwire direct connect can work too for a longer term kludge, but if you’re going to go to that length, like to find the 20-conductor cable, you may as well build the...

    Tascam M-30 Overdubbing Questions

Both the manual and sales brochure explain that when only one channel ASSIGN button is latched on an input channel, the signal goes only to that buss, and if two or more ASSIGN buttons are latched then the PAN control is active, sweeping the signal between busses 1 & 3 (L) and 2 & 4 (R). You...

Tascam 388 with identical hiss across all 8 channels (no tape required!)

None of them are designed for audio band measurement. What I mean by that is, for measuring audio signal (like test tone, and audio signal is AC, not DC), generally you look for a meter that is rated for relatively accurate measurement from 20Hz to 20kHz, which is the standard audio band...

Tascam 388 with identical hiss across all 8 channels (no tape required!)

So, I think it would be worthwhile to check ALL the DC rails. I know some of this is duplicative to what you’ve already done, but here’s where you measure each rail: +5VDC (logic): measure between pins 5 & 6 of P7 on the MOTHER 2 PCB +15VDC (audio): measure between pins 1 & 3 of P5 on the...

Tascam 388 with identical hiss across all 8 channels (no tape required!)

Can you be more specific on from what pin to what pin of what connector on the outputs of the power supply PCB you were measuring? Also, have you visually inspected to ensure there are no bent pins on the motherboard? Also have you reflowed the solder joints of the power supply PCB edge...

Tascam 388 with identical hiss across all 8 channels (no tape required!)

I’ll have to review what’s installed as far as replacing the bridge… If it’s only in RMX mode and therefore sourcing the tape section, it could be one of the other power rails. You should check all of them for clean and correct DC voltage. Do you hear the hum in the TAPE OUT jacks as well?
