    TASCAM M-520

Why did you use the 350 when recording? Why not just use the M-520 for everything? It’s a better signal path than the 350.

    Son Of Tascam 58 Story...

I can’t believe it’s been over five years since I updated this thread. Wow. Shortly after the last post the COVID-19 pandemic bloomed, and in the intervening years between then and now there’s been a lot to fill the time…some challenging family adventures both within my household as well as...

Does it belong here or elsewhere?

Honest question…I’m well over halfway through a deep-dive rebuild/upgrade on the Roland JUNO-106 1980s digitally-controlled analog synthesizer I recently acquired (related thread here: https://homerecording.com/bbs/threads/you-never-know-what-you-might-find-for-free%E2%80%A6.430360/). I’d like...

Yeah, maybe so. Totally good call.

    TASCAM M-520

Good call, @RFR…the ACCESS points are right after the mic amp. So you would see O/L lamp activity but no signal would pass after that without the jumpers in place.

    TASCAM M-520

Yeah, when talking about the M-500 series I refer to the “PGM” groups which is Teac’s verbiage, it they are also labeled as BUSS on the jack panel. Anyway…yes…the subgroups or mono mix busses…all good terminology.

    I don’t understand this…the OP notes an 80-8…which has meters…?

tascam 38 tape heads and lifespan.

We don’t really care about wear on the lifter posts. They are sacrificial in a manner of speaking. But…yes…you’ve been disabling the lifters and their primary job of lifting the tape away from the heads during shuttling and fast-winding. This isn’t so much to reduce wear, but to avoid you having...

Here it is, everybody…the link to the AT-RMX64 Service Manual is in the description of the video below:

    precision reels!!

You can mount it however you like. It’s not that you can’t operate it vertically or angled or horizontal or that one is more “right” than the other. Notice RRuskin didn’t say vertical is “wrong”, horizontal is “right”, he’s simply pointing out operating the machine vertically long-term will...

    precision reels!!

I don’t need a video. Based on your description I’m pretty sure you need to adjust the brakes. They were probably close to being out of adjustment and then you put more mass on the reel table with the precision reel, highlighting the maladjustment. Adjusting the brakes is easy. It’s a mechanical...

Or check for a tacky brake solenoid cushion. Ask questions. I just don’t have time to go into detail atm.

    precision reels!!

The six-screw reels tend to have a hub that’s a closer tolerance fit on the hub adapter…less eccentricity. This may make zero difference. You may need to adjust the reel table height to accommodate the thicker flanger. I prefer the precision reels. But they, except maybe in some rare conditions...

tascam 38 tape heads and lifespan.

Okay. I’d be HiGHLY surprised if you could visually see any wear that’s occurred since you’ve used the machine. Even if you’d been using it for hours daily. In the example of the MM-1200, tip depth of a typical tape head is around 0.020” +/-0.005”~0.010”. 10% of that is 0.002”…over 8 years. You...

minimum loss patching for a tascam m512 mixer

The M-500 “STEREO” busses are not really intended for main summing…they are essentially the CONTROL ROOM and STUDIO outputs. To minimize the number of unnecessary amp stages I would use the RCV jacks for inputs, some to a pair of PGM groups, and feed the master recorder/computer using the PGM...

tascam 38 tape heads and lifespan.

A couple suggestions about your cleaning techniques: when you are wiping the heads don’t wipe perpendicular to the laminations (don’t scrub up and down)…always wipe parallel to them (side-to-side). Always use a clean area of whatever you are using to wipe the heads as you move from component to...

tascam 38 tape heads and lifespan.

The lifters push the tape or “lift” the tape away from the heads in fast-wind modes. Like I said earlier it’s a little hard to tell from the pics because the heads and other tape path components are out of focus, but I see a lighter than average wear pattern in the lifters from what I can tell.

If the problems are always with a particular track or two, and it’s consistent that way, you can swap nap cards to see if the problem follows the amp card swap. If the swap causes even new and weird problems with signal level and such, like you feel like you’re chasing a moving target, it’s...
