Why does the Tascam m-106 have PGM out 1-4 and only monitor out with no faders?

So, what’s helpful to realize or accept is the M-106 is a small format budget mixer, and along with that comes a limited feature set. But being that it was designed and built in the mid 1980s by Teac/Tascam it is a much, much more robust build than anything in that same class you will find from...

    Tascam 320 vs 520

Yeah hi…I must have updated information in some other thread…maybe the thread for my prototype Tascam console that has the same mic amp as the M-50/M-500 series (which is also the same as the MX-80 rackmount mic preamp, and the 388 mic preamp). The 5532 works. Almost no difference in DC...

    MCI JH-636 Story

Now I can see the pic. I also did some reading in the meantime. Very, very cool. Thanks for being gracious with my ignorance.

    MCI JH-636 Story

I can’t see anything but ohhhhhhkayyyy that explains it…pre-Harman. I’ll have to see if I can find out more about that. At any rate very cool.

    MCI JH-636 Story

Sounds like a good set of plans…couple of nice consoles. I was just curious about the Vari-Q modules; not any sort of deal-breaker. On your Series Two is it modified? According to the schematics the mic amp does have a discrete front-end using six transistors, but that goes into an OPA275, so...

    MCI JH-636 Story

Nice! I like the pre-Sony JH-600 consoles…looks like a nice straight desk. Any Vari-Q modules? Do you know if the power supplies have been serviced? What will become of the Soundcraft?

Is what you have the same as this? If so, I suspect what you are missing follows the same convention. Hope that is helpful.

Tangled Up Tape. Is It Still Usable?

I’m not laughing at you…hopefully laughing with you…the things the digital-only folks just might not understand us tape folks may encounter, but also it’s breaking my brain how tape got…knotted…you said don’t ask…I’m not asking…I’m just…yeah…I’m just. :)

Tangled Up Tape. Is It Still Usable?

Depending on how wrinkled/creased it is, sure you can use it, but it won’t perform like unwrinkled/uncreased tape.

    Tascam 388 Track 1 / 3 Crosstalk / Bleed

Fascinating. What exactly happens when C111 touches the BUSS A PCB would depend on exactly it is touching. In your case it propagated the pre dbx processing track 1 reproduce signal to the track 3 channel. C111 is the repro level trimmer output coupling capacitor. From there the signal goes to...

    Tascam 388 Track 1 / 3 Crosstalk / Bleed

I don’t think so…the connectors don’t allow you to double-up connections. But regardless, if there is some way I’m not thinking of, the process should hone in on the fault.

    Tascam 388 Track 1 / 3 Crosstalk / Bleed

No, don’t chase. No ghosts. That always creates more ghosts. Sweep the ghosts away with methodical objectivity. The signal from the tape head goes through wires to the head connector, then to the motherboard, then to the R/P amp cards, then to the motherboard, then to the dbx cards, then back...

    Tascam 388 Track 1 / 3 Crosstalk / Bleed

No, not confusing. If you latch a record function switch, depending on the position of the PGM/CUE switch, the meter is then monitoring the PGM group signal, not the tape track. And confirm again you did swap the tracks 1 & 3 R/P amp card with another card and the problem did not follow the...

    Tascam 388 Track 1 / 3 Crosstalk / Bleed

So tell me if this is true…just to verify: When you record signal to track 1 on a blank section of tape, and then reproduce that recording from track 1, the signal recorded to track 1 can be heard via input channel 1 set to RMX and input channel 3 set to RMX, and also via TAPE OUT 1 & 3 jacks...

    Tascam 388 Track 1 / 3 Crosstalk / Bleed

Just to be redundantly sure, would you do me a favor and record something track 3 and verify when you flip the tape it reproduces only on channel 6, even though when it is not flipped the signal reproduces on both channels 1 & 3?

And that’s why I had you do that. I’ll take all the clues and develop a theory to test as soon as I can.

    Tascam 388 Track 1 / 3 Crosstalk / Bleed

Flip the tape over. Does your signal play back now on tracks 6 & 8, or just 8?

    Tascam 388 Track 1 / 3 Crosstalk / Bleed

So when you are attempting to record to track 1 only via PGM 1, do you see high-level bleed to track 3 on the PGM 3/track 3 meter, or do you only see signal on the PGM 1/track 1 meter? Similarly, while attempting to record to only track 1 via PGM1, when you monitor PGM 1 via the monitor mixer...
