Not 100% sure what I am trying to get at here, but let me describe the thought thread.
As I have been studying movie composers, Jan Hammer, Danny Elfman, Ennio Morricone, even Paul McCartney (Live and Let Die), since these people have to "compose on demand" and do very well. That then brings me...
My personal opinion is the bass work closer to the vocals. In my head, those are the two main focuses of the song. I really think the bass should have the same wetness as the main vocal.
Still like what you are doing.
Brian, there are two main settings for MIDI (assuming a VSTi), one is velocity which indicates how hard the not is to be played. The second is the channel fader in how much is gong to be sent to the a bus or the master. Since the tone is not created until the MIDI file is played, there is...
I like your interpretation. The drum delay seems to be out of time with the vibe. I also think since the bass is so important, you really have to hit all of the notes. Like 9 beats/notes and I think it should be clearer. I think part is that important.
Because the bass is so important, you...
Ha, I thought the DI sounded pretty good. Some reverb, not much EQ and a few tweaks, that would do a nice job. Amp sounded good, you could tell it would cut through the mix for sure. I thought both were very usable.
I really need to try that sometime. I have heard many stories, past and present about DI'ing the take and then running it back to an amp. Thanks for the share.
Well, my opinion doesn't really mean anything, it is simply feedback, your opinion does matter. It is your mix. If you want it dark, you keep it that way.
Hopefully, you take the feedback that way. Ask 10 people on this board, "how does this sound", you will get 11 answers. :)
I think it is greatly improved. when your voice comes in at 1:09, 1:53, 2:16, 2:53. I would think you want to pull that back, I figured you are wanting it to rise above it, but it might be too much (doesn't feel correct). Tad more bottom (subjective).
You added in all the right places. Let's...
I listened to the second mix. Bring up the vocals in the verse, and a bit more high end and I think you have the making of a fine tune. Like the guitar sound.
This is the hard part when you are getting deeper into this. I like the mix better, now with some bass back in, you can bring up the highs. Might be compression that is doing it. But a bit more air and I think your mix is getting dialed in.
Key is Bb. Verse - F Min, Bb, Dmin, Amin, Gmin (all with 7th), chorus Gmin, C, Edim, Bb, Amin. And thanks for the listen.
Bb is a rather nice key. Not as exotic as a lot of people think. Doesn't stray too much from C and is not difficult to play.
