    A.I. Vs Me. Mastering Shootout

I have a couple of mixes that I've been working on as I've learned Mastering techniques. One track in particular gave me a lot of trouble and when I got it to a place I was happy with, I decided to try Mastering the track through a variety of services, and thought it might be interesting to...

    Worrisome

I agree with Triple M - keeper guitar tone. It is competing with the bass to me a bit. I'm hearing a 160hz bump and a lot of 2khz. Try taking down 2khz and soften any 150-200hz boosts. See if that just smooths them out more without competing with the bass and retaining their bite and punch. -...

I need honest opinion - Comparing it with the popular/professional music in general - Updated 7/30/2023

Both versions are so vastly different it's impossible to give a mix critique. Which version does the artist want to release?? If it's the EDM one, see my above post. If it's the acoustic one, that's a whole other thing

    New Honey Hunters - Palimpsest

Maybe "taking a chunk out" of 2k is the wrong phrase ... A dynamic EQ cut at 2k could potentially smooth out the vocals at the right times while retaining clarity and some bite.

@jerberson12 I *think* this would do it for the vocals: - De-ess more - Boost broadly at 5k or 6k - about 2db But there is more going on in the reference mix. Hesitantly posting this sample. I think you are close, and ... also love this as a song - music, lyrics and production. So good! :)

I Belong - Please critique - Pop Song (Critique 2nd mix version) - updated

@jerberson12 I'm hesitantly posting this. There might be some loudness distortion due to the processing I did, but the concept is the drum tones being more up front along with a bit of midrange presence and an attempt to tame some extreme highs. I can't stop listening to it. I love this song.

    In Dreams - Rock Song

Thanks, that's a good reminder. I STRUGGLED with the bass track. It came down to source tones from the guitar itself. Super boomy. The performance was good though, so I kept it and tried to make it work. I'd like to get a jazz bass to see if that helps give a more low-midrange tone while still...

    New Honey Hunters - Palimpsest

it seems to be a matter of balancing the vocals out with the guitars. both can't live in 2khz land, but both currently do. Cutting a chunk of 2k in the vocals and perhaps boosting 5k for clarity might be the path to keep things separated ...?

Roll Um Easy (Little Feat / Lowell George cover)

Np :) There is almost always content above 16khz from the vocals, and 16k and above is where the acoustic guitar gets its shimmer. It's always challenging when there's ac issues :( A power conditioner could help with that. Fridges (big and small) are a mortal enemy of good tone haha A hum...

Steps you can do earlier in the mix to make it easier later on?

and Automation is the last thing I do personally ... As you finish songs that you like the sound of, save them as templates and take out the files ... then next time you're 80% of the way there after you finish recording :)

Steps you can do earlier in the mix to make it easier later on?

Get it right at the source. that's the long and short of it. Do these things and the rest comes a LOT easier in my experience ... A good performance is #1. Everything needs to be in the pocket, and vocals tuned as transparently as desired Use the best quality instruments you have, and try not...

    In Dreams - Rock Song

I released this recently, and am curious about feedback on the mix even though it's after the fact. It has more than the usual amount of low end for a rock track, but that was planned. At this point, it would be changing my templates if I've missed something huge (hopefully I haven't lol!)

I Belong - Please critique - Pop Song (Critique 2nd mix version) - updated

The hi hat sample is pretty crispy. My brain wanted to hear it (or something like it) come in at hte beginning of each chorus to give the whole chorus some slap. Otherwise, kick and snare could each come up maybe 2db to be more defined, and minor things other than that. The bass could come up...

    New Honey Hunters - Palimpsest

np - and well done! I think mix 5 is getting close. The doubled backing vocals in the chorus could maybe come down to feel more like an effect rather than a whole extra singer. Aside from that, I'm still hearing a big build up at 100-150hz, and 1-3k. I've called mixes less done than this *done*...

Roll Um Easy (Little Feat / Lowell George cover)

Interesting things happening in this mix ... but totally workable I think. A bit of tuning would do wonders ... just transparent tuning. So many singers (including myself) struggle with being pitchy as we hit notes, then we level out. But I like this song. It's good. Here's what I found ... the...

    New Honey Hunters - Palimpsest

The mix has kind of a smiley face profile overall to me. It's a bit crispy but also boomy and then pokey in some of the upper mids. The vocals are pretty midrangey too and could use some taming. But as a mix, It's possible to make it work. I did a test for fun to bring suggestions into focus. I...

(Alternative Hip-Hop) My Version of the Blues

I agree, yeah a few of those notes have tone way down around 40hz. I just used a sine wave generator to see what would happen haha

(Alternative Hip-Hop) My Version of the Blues

This song is great! I noticed the sound stage had a lot of 400-600k in the vocals, almost now low end, and scooped mids. The highs sat nicely overall I thought. So I fiddled with some of that as a test to see if a great polished sound was in there ... I also had a bit of fun before work and...

SPOTIFY normalization, anyone has experience with that?

Here are the specs. Limiters for "soft" tracks that fall below spotify's -11 or -14 thresholds are set at -1. https://support.spotify.com/ca-en/artists/article/loudness-normalization/ So ... If you master the softest tracks to -11LUFS and don't ever exceed -9 lufs (or -7lufs if you want a...

Mastering is Etherial, and that's not a bad thing

That wisdom isn't as self evident as I had been led to believe in my years reading forums. Oh wait. more words haha ... Gain stage to line level in the recording process and everything will sound as good as it can based on mic choice, placement and instrument. For the kids, That's 0VU or an...
