Maybe "taking a chunk out" of 2k is the wrong phrase ... A dynamic EQ cut at 2k could potentially smooth out the vocals at the right times while retaining clarity and some bite.

@jerberson12 I *think* this would do it for the vocals: - De-ess more - Boost broadly at 5k or 6k - about 2db But there is more going on in the reference mix. Hesitantly posting this sample. I think you are close, and ... also love this as a song - music, lyrics and production. So good! :)

@jerberson12 I'm hesitantly posting this. There might be some loudness distortion due to the processing I did, but the concept is the drum tones being more up front along with a bit of midrange presence and an attempt to tame some extreme highs. I can't stop listening to it. I love this song.

Thanks, that's a good reminder. I STRUGGLED with the bass track. It came down to source tones from the guitar itself. Super boomy. The performance was good though, so I kept it and tried to make it work. I'd like to get a jazz bass to see if that helps give a more low-midrange tone while still...

it seems to be a matter of balancing the vocals out with the guitars. both can't live in 2khz land, but both currently do. Cutting a chunk of 2k in the vocals and perhaps boosting 5k for clarity might be the path to keep things separated ...?

Np :) There is almost always content above 16khz from the vocals, and 16k and above is where the acoustic guitar gets its shimmer. It's always challenging when there's ac issues :( A power conditioner could help with that. Fridges (big and small) are a mortal enemy of good tone haha A hum...

and Automation is the last thing I do personally ... As you finish songs that you like the sound of, save them as templates and take out the files ... then next time you're 80% of the way there after you finish recording :)

I released this recently, and am curious about feedback on the mix even though it's after the fact. It has more than the usual amount of low end for a rock track, but that was planned. At this point, it would be changing my templates if I've missed something huge (hopefully I haven't lol!)

The hi hat sample is pretty crispy. My brain wanted to hear it (or something like it) come in at hte beginning of each chorus to give the whole chorus some slap. Otherwise, kick and snare could each come up maybe 2db to be more defined, and minor things other than that. The bass could come up...
