Headphones vs Monitors for Mastering WTF? Oh Hell no!.......never say never ;)

Sam Inglis wrote a reasonably sensible article in SOS https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/setting-atmos-mixing-room I still can't help thinking that much of what we read is being pushed by Dolby's marketing department though.

    Used Ripoffs and Rules? U87.....and a RODE NT2 U87-headbasket

It is a while since I've encountered an NT2 but I did have one beside a couple of U87s once and they were very close in size.

X32 As a Standalone Multitrack Recorder...?

In my experience the Tascam Model 16 is very limiting and doesn't even make a great audio interface (there are too many ways to stop audio passing through). It sounds like you already have the closest to what you want with the DP32 - the next step is a DAW.

    pc recommendations for 16 channel

Our lad's 4th gen i7 laptop came with Win11. I guess the refurbishers did whatever shenanigans are needed although I think they have their own official deal with Microsoft so I don't know whether they can get a version of Win11 for older computers or if they just hack the OS.

Is it possible to get a good sounding song without using any EQ or Compression relying on Volume Balancing alone ? ( indie rock)

It is certainly possible but you really need to start well before you hit the record button. Think about the arrangement. Does every instrument have its own space or a defined function in the arrangement? Then, when you get to the studio are your drums properly tuned? Are the instruments...

    pc recommendations for 16 channel

My 19 year old AMD Sempron laptop handles 16 channels of 96kHz 24 bit audio just fine. You don't need much power if you use something like Reaper. Our lad has been doing 1080 video animations and video editing with my 2nd gen i7 Dell Precision laptop and he's been fairly happy but he's just...

How to make instrument take narrower range of the stereo spectrum?

Is the kick recorded in mono? If so, then it should sit dead in the centre if the pan control is in the centre and you have no other processing going on. If you add some stereo reverb then that will give you a wider image but you could always narrow the reverb to mono to keep the image central.

    Used Ripoffs and Rules? U87.....and a RODE NT2 U87-headbasket

In Europe you can buy K701s from Thomann for the equivalent of $120 (including tax). Usually European prices are much higher than US prices so it makes a change for it to be the other way round for once.

    Headphone ohms?

That's where Sennheiser HD25s win out - if you replace the earpads, the foam cover over the diaphragm also gets replaced so everything in contact with your ears is new. My HD25s had probably been used by hundreds of people before I bought them. I replaced the leatherette earpads with the more...

Help me choose an interface please

I think I know the monitors you are talking about and they have a great reputation. The drum machines and synths that I'm talking about were designed before digital recording became prevalent (it was around but strictly the province of classical music) so there was no impetus to limit...

Help me choose an interface please

If you are using any plug-ins or processing then they may change their behaviour at high sample rates. I've certainly noticed that some plug-ins, particularly compressors, sound better at high sample rates - even if the input and output are resampled from/to 44.1kHz. That's why some plug-ins...

    Used Ripoffs and Rules? U87.....and a RODE NT2 U87-headbasket

I don't know much about current U87 lookalikes but the older lookalikes from the 1990s like the Rode NT2 and the VTL CR3-A have a certain sound which can be superficially seductive (and will work well on certain voices) but is nothing like the sound of a U87. In my experience the U87 gives you...

Help me choose an interface please

Dan Lavry wrote a good document on why the 192kHz sampling rate was actually technically inferior to 96kHz around 20 years ago. Basically, there is no useful audible information beyond about 22kHz (young kids can hear up there although not older people) so there is little point in going too high...

    Headphone ohms?

The M40s should be 2dB louder than the M30s if the specs are correct.

Will microphone isolation shields help at all with live singing?

Try an Audix OM7 microphone - probably the most feedback resistant vocal mic available. You need a good mic technique to use it to its best though.

Revox A77 MK2 - capstan speed stuck high, can't find the culprit

It is always worth investing in a cheap component tester so that you can test the components that you remove and the components that you fit. You would have picked up the faulty 2N3441 that way. I'm also not a fan of changing components without good reason. The only components that need changing...

Glastonbury 2023 - brand names covered up?

Of course the BBC aren't supposed to allow advertising so they always used to cover up manufacturers logos but I certainly noticed a very large Roland logo during the short time I was watching Glastonbury this year.

Alright what do ns10s sound like?

Some people called them check monitors. The timeline as I see it went 70s - Auratone 80s - AR18 90s - NS10 10s - Avantone (basically an Auratone copy) So we went full circle. However, lots of engineers take their own monitors that they know well to different studios or they just do all their...

    DBX problem on Tascam MS16

Some of the Dolby S chips are known to be unreliable and spares just aren't available. Later examples of the Fostex G series machines suffer from the same problem when they started using the single Dolby chip rather than the 6 chip module.

    TEAC A-3340S Service

Don't even think about trying to play Ampex tapes without baking because you will need to clean your heads every 30 seconds or so. A suitable dehydrator isn't expensive and it is just false economy to try to play the tape without baking. Here's the one that I use...
