    What console is this?

Coincidentally I just happen to have found a Showcase directory from 1996 which has an entry for Impulse Sound Recording Studio in Wallsend which lists the desk as a Soundtracs CM4400, the tape machine as a Soundcraft 760 Series III and the monitors as JBL4430. The contact is Keith Nichol - who...

How Were 388s Originally Shipped To Stores?

A Fostex E16 weighs around 30kg but it was shipped in a standard cardboard box surrounded by shaped polystyrene.

    A bunch of interfaces

If you buy an RME interface you can often use a second or third one of the same type with a single ASIO driver - one of the reasons why I would always suggest that serious users should go for RME.

    A bunch of interfaces

I think Microsoft probably did sort it but no-one (apart from Cakewalk) wanted to use their system. So we're stuck with Steinberg's more primitive driver model for music use. Mind you, this is immaterial to the OP because they are on a Mac where multiple interfaces are no problem provided they...

Advise on proposed shed to studio conversion

You are right - I missed the tin roof. It needs a properly tiled roof to have any hope of being made soundproof - and you'll need a separate internal structure for soundproofing. The window would have to be removed and replaced by blocks. As with so many of these studio plans, it is probably...

Advise on proposed shed to studio conversion

I think you missed the bit where the OP mentioned 200mm concrete blocks. That's much better than your average shed. It won't be enough on its own and the doors and windows will be a problem but it is a start. I'd agree that it is worth a look in SOS (but then I would say that wouldn't I) and a...

    A bunch of interfaces

I don't know how well multiple Focusrite drivers work but I do know that RME devices are intended to be used in multiples. For example, you can use up to 3 Digiface USB interfaces on one machine to give up to 96 inputs and 102 output channels.

Strange noises coming from a Tascam Interface

I've got a fluorescent magnifying lamp that puts out lots of noise around 25kHz. Most switch mode power supplies work at 100kHz upwards although there are a few that work much lower. I also have an LCD screen that sometimes puts out little chirps as the picture changes.

    Wurlitzer Through Wah Pedal

Vintage Vibe make a piano that looks like a Wurlitzer although they claim it sounds more like a Rhodes. That one will set you back at least $6000. There is also the Rhodes Mk8 which is now made in the UK and costs nearly £8000.

    Wurlitzer Through Wah Pedal

If you use a decent weighted keyboard I've found that the old GSI Mr Tramp VSTi does a pretty good job at emulating a Wurlitzer. It doesn't feel right without a weighted keyboard though. Nowadays the real Wurlitzer lives in the living room and I use Mr Tramp in the studio.

    Wurlitzer Through Wah Pedal

Maybe try a DI box with ground lift. I know that Wurlitzers always seem to have problems with hum and grounding but miking it up really won't do it justice. Give the headphone output a try too.

    Wurlitzer Through Wah Pedal

The outputs are underneath near the left end. The aux is the one towards the back of the instrument. Pink Floyd made extensive use of the Wurlitzer and it was actually one of the tracks on Animals that convinced me that I wanted one. I was lucky enough to have a friend who went for one of the...

    Wurlitzer Through Wah Pedal

There are two outputs on a Wurlitzer. The Aux output should be fine for a guitar pedal but the headphone output could be a bit high if the volume is turned up too high.

    Recording high res

Up until fairly recently I was recording 16 tracks at 96kHz/24bits on a 2005 vintage Acer laptop with a single core Duron processor using Reaper. It was perfectly happy, even when using an instance of Uhe's Satin on each track for Dolby decoding. I could do 16 tracks at 48kHz/16 bits on a...

Same 2 songs on separate albums, different mixing studios?

If you are using a professional studio then they should be used to people taking projects elsewhere to be mixed and mastered - and possibly adding extra tracks too. It happens all the time. There are amateur studios around who seem to be precious about their work but a proper professional studio...

    Fostex R8 8th channel no Record/playback?

That sounds like a dirty connection. Trace through the wiring to the head and check that any connectors are tight.

    Fostex R8 8th channel no Record/playback?

The first thing I'd do is give the tape path a very thorough clean. Dirty heads while recording can cause dropouts and a dirty capstan will cause the warble. If you are trying to use Ampex or Quantegy tape then stop - you'll only gum up your machine with as it sheds sticky residue everywhere.

    Fostex R8 8th channel no Record/playback?

Try putting a tape that you've recorded on backwards (ie, swap the take-up and supply reels). Do you now hear a backwards version of track 1 through track 8?

Low volume on my headphones from the audio interface

As Dave says, the HA400 works fine with high impedance headphones. So do all the other audio interfaces that I've tried (RME, Focusrite and Zoom) although I've not used the MOTU ones. I usually buy high impedance headphones because I have one or two old bits of gear that need them.

AKG C1000 - the mic people hated for 30+ Years

When the C1000 first came out there wasn't that much competition. You either had the £20 condenser mics from the likes of Eagle or Altai or you had mics like the C451 or SM81. Most of the decent alternatives were more expensive but the slightly larger size of the C1000 made it look more...
