    Remixing old mono tapes

I don't know about Spectra Layers, but I know that in Spleeter and Demucs you will just end up with mono stems. However, you can then apply stereo effects to just one stem rather than the whole recording which may sound more natural. Typically you could add some panned short delays to guitars or...

    Audio interface vs overdub

Hang on - if you read the original post you'll see that Tim already has an interface with his Zoom H6. There's no need for him to buy anything else. https://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/using-the-zoom-h6-as-an-audio-interface/ looks like a good guide to using the H6 as an audio...

    Audio interface vs overdub

That spec is overkill for Reaper. Up until recently my remote recording rig was an old AMD Duron laptop running Windows XP with only 512MB of memory. It handled 24 track recording and mixing with no problems unless I tried to use multiple convolution reverbs. The Zoom X-Y mics that the OP is...

    Pulling the trigger

I would echo the Reaper suggestion. The only reason for going for Protools is if you will be regularly using a Protools system elsewhere and you need to exchange files. Even then, you can always use something like AA Translator to convert sessions if you need to. Reaper doesn't have all the...

Tascam 244 - Conversion of Old Tapes

Different 4 track machines can run at different speeds. The more up-market ones run at 3.75ips (double normal cassette speed) while the cheaper ones run at 1.875ips which is normal cassette speed. Tascam units tend to use dBx noise reduction while others use Dolby B or Dolby C. As Boulder Sound...

Alright what do ns10s sound like?

Take the innards out of the Thomann amp and put a set of Hypex modules in there. This will give you an amp that will give the Bryston a good run for its money. I did this with a Quad 405 and it has improved the sound slightly - although any difference is fairly subtle compared to the difference...

Is mastering truly necessary these days?

That's where reference tracks come in handy - something you can use as a fixed point of comparison.

I thought I'd get my reel to reels plugged in and try them - wished I'd not bothered!

You need to learn how to set up your tape machine. I only skimmed the video but, from the first source/tape switch I could immediately tell that you have not aligned the machine properly. The difference should not be that great with a properly working machine.

    Parallel compression A/B level matching

Reaper gives you a mix option on plug-ins so that you can easily use them in parallel mode (look for the little rotary control in the top right corner of the effects window). Reaper's own compressor also has wet and dry controls which allow you to easily do parallel compression and to set the...

    The Parting Glass

I'm afraid I preferred the second to last version with the louder vocals rather than the last one with the lowered vocals and strings. To me, the vocals are the main part of this piece and need to be forward.

Feedback on my Mix/Master... I'd like to finish the track up this week and I'm at my wit's end with it

I'd say that's pretty much finished. It has a great relaxed feel to it - all the players seem to understand how to groove together. If you want some nit picks then I'd suggest narrowing the guitars a bit and using a wide stereo sea sample rather than the mono sample you have at the moment. I'd...

    The Parting Glass

I'd say you've pretty much nailed it with that one - the vocals are clearer, the strings are more natural and everything sounds more coherent.

    The Parting Glass

My thoughts are that everything is a bit separate. The piano is spread wide with nothing in the centre while the vocal is right in the middle. The piano is also a bit too loud which makes the vocal seem a bit quiet and they sound like they are in different spaces. With this style of music you...

    Are PreAmps a marketing myth?

The circuit design of the Studiomaster is pretty much the same as used in modern preamps (or at least preamps from the likes of Allen and Heath and similar quality manufacturers). It is just that some of the real budget brands have tried to pare things back too much and ended up with...

Alright what do ns10s sound like?

It may be controversial, but the LS3/5a's do what the NS10s do but better. I only keep the NS10s in case a visiting artist or engineer wants to use them.

    Focusrite 18i20 3rd Gen Issue

The problem is actually the other way round. In the old days you would have a button labelled pad to allow the preamp to handle higher output mics. Even the budget Studiomaster that Dave and I are discussing in the other thread has a 20dB pad button. Nowadays manufacturers are so pushed to make...

    Are PreAmps a marketing myth?

There are a couple of circuit diagrams for the Mixdown on the net. One shows a couple of 2SA970 transistors feeding half a TL072 while a newer one for the Classic 8 has a pair of 2SA1137s feeding a 4560 op amp. Mine probably has the older version - it certainly uses TL072s in there - and I have...

    Are PreAmps a marketing myth?

My Studiomaster Mixdown desk was designed over 35 years ago and the preamps in there are very quiet and sound as accurate as any designed since. I was amazed at the time that a fairly budget desk could be so good - and if Studiomaster could do it back then, I see no reason why other...

Beatles recorded Sgt Pepper using a 4-track machines. If they didn't bounce how many tracks would they have used?

I'm sure I've seen the whole album documented in a book that one of our studio partners had - he was very into getting to know The Beatle's recording methods. I don't think it was the book that Rich mentioned as the one I'm thinking of concentrated on Sgt Pepper.

Isolating windows in a normal room

In one studio we used some secondary glazing kits that we bought from a DIY store. Fortunately the outer windows were double glazed and there was a one foot gap between the outer windows and the secondary glazing so it was very effective. The kit also allowed the windows to open when we weren't...
