Original tune: Fair is Fair (Sludgy melodic alternative ambient rock)

On the last tune I did, I mixed to where I couldn't get it better. Then I put Ozone on the master out, and it made it sound better. Then I muted Ozone and sent it to an ME and he made it better than Ozone ever could. I want to be able to get to the point where Ozone doesn't make my mixes sound...

Original tune: Fair is Fair (Sludgy melodic alternative ambient rock)

For some reason, this one reminds me of Oasis. Except I like this one better than Oasis - really. Here's some mix feedback, but I'm not sure what you'll do with it, because it's so global: Last night I listened to it through my monitors. Tonight I listened again (because I like the tune and the...

I think the horns are Fiverr hires - the credits come up on the video during their solos. The drummer's Tjarko's buddy, Geert-Jan - they've played together for years, or decades even. Playing like this is way beyond my pay grade. I'm like: 'Slow down, boys - have you heard of Johnny Cash?'

    You - Too short?

@HumanPlanet. I'm old, and getting left behind by the times. No, hold the line. I want to know what's going on, even if it doesn't talk to me. Nola speculated you're ahead of your time. That's flattering, but here's something consoling, maybe - I'm old, and increasingly out of tune with stuff...

    You - Too short?

I prefer real, too, but I don't get what I want these days all the time, so this is a case of 'that's some weird shit right there, but each to their own'. It's too sibilant and it ended abruptly. One of those is a nit.

No, this is Tjarko's work, not mine. (We collaborate, but not on this one.) But he and I talk about mixes regularly and have a slightly different approach, so other opinions interest me. But we're converging on this one, because I think it sounds great.

My partner in crime has been at it again. Whatcha think? (It's explicit, but it's in Dutch, so it's safe for work unless you're in Amsterdam.)

Yeah, it was just a scratch track, but the acoustic part was the strongest feature. And the bleak lyrics. ?

I've never found it easier to be myself. Not really. Not when I'm honest. And nobody complains when I'm honest with myself. Which is just as well, cuz it's none of their fucking business.

That's pretty bleak. Here's an idea: now write a song about that same guy that does a similar cross-section of his personality, but in the context of something that makes his life worthwhile. You know how to put words and music together.

    Dark Spanish Night -Remix 3-

And 'reflects' is the right word. It's very reflective - I find I settle into the tune as it unfolds. If a woman has that effect on me, it's dangerous, but if a tune has that effect on me, I'm lost in admiration. Really good work.

Isn't it lonely final mix. critique

I want to talk about two things, the most important first, I think. The psychology of recording and mixing deserves its own forum. It's a common psychological pattern that we perceive things and situations in ways that don't match the facts, and when it's art production for an audience, that...

Isn't it lonely final mix. critique

Kind of my impression as well. I find myself focussing on the vocal cuz it's set back relative to the in-your-face guitar, and it's even buried a bit in the section that starts at 2.18, which is a pity, because those are the first words that jumped out at me on the first listen. Might be a...

Earbud listen Engaging. Good drums, good swagger, great lyrics, lovely arrangement that maintains interest. I want to listen to this one through headphones and speakers later. Good work. I love your approach of putting the mix on the shelf for awhile and coming back later. Wisdom, wisdom.

    Backspace Guitar - Vanhaye

Well, that one started off in a genre and moved out of that genre later. Nice shift. The slide show was really fun too. Exactly the right amount of reverb, too - lots!

Okay, I can't get any further with this one, so here it is - there's a point at which you just have to sign off on it. This thread's got the whole mix evolution of this tune. I'm not going to tweak it anymore, cuz it's done, but I'm still open to mix comments because I can use that for the next...

Mix 3 has more body to my ears. By comparison, Mix 2 seems a tad bright/thin.
