Questions about safe storage of effects pedals, amplifiers, audio interfaces, and other music electronics.

I've seen gear stored in some very precarious situations with no ill effect.

    Newbie DAW user

If you were able to get a good kick sound with an analog recorder you should be able to get a good sound with a DAW. All I can suggest is to make sure you're not clipping. I can't help you with your gain settings since I use Reaper.

    2008 Martin D28 - horrible resonances

The solution sounds simple to me: Sell it and find one you like. When anyone asks me for advice on buying an acoustic I always say to play a bunch because they all play and sound different. Years ago I had an acoustic made by a well known builder and after paying a lot and waiting for 8 months I...

Does Reaper have a function to render MIDI to .wav?

I do it all the time and I use the render function.

Is mastering truly necessary these days?

Excellent points. Much of the end result is a matter of taste. I've heard many rock bands say that they dislike the sound of their album due to the fact that they had no control of the final output. As a home recordist I do and I like my mixes and final sound. Could it be better? I'm sure it...

ok, i need help picking a drum kit! same song, two kits..

Second kit. The first one's snare sounds sharper and to me is harsh. Probably why some think the second sounds like there's a blanket. Cymbals in both sound a bit thin but IMO cymbals are difficult to sound good. I always have cymbals on there own track and add EQ. I actually dislike the hihat...

    Backwards Guitar

Yeah, I remember those days when I would record guitar then flip the reels to get reverse guitar. It was fun but it's much easier these days. I use Reaper as my DAW.

Do you need to be on a label to join Bandcamp

I've been on Bandcamp for a while and it's the only place that makes me any money. More than Spotify anyway. The only catch is that they take 15% of anything you make from digital downloads. I don't do CDs or merch so I can't speak to that. I only upload original music because I don't want to...

How do I "learn" my new monitors...

For me it was a lot of back and forth listening between my studio monitors and other playback systems until I got a good overall sound. I do use reference tracks and then mix with my monitors. When I get close I listen on other systems and take notes on which frequencies need adjustment and then...

Opinions on de-essers in signal chain

I only de-ess when absolutely necessary and when I do it's after compression and EQ. Just how it works best IME.

Is mastering truly necessary these days?

As compared to when? I ask because there are many more tools available to home recordists now compared to the time prior to the arrival of the DAW. When I was recording with tape I couldn't afford all that I would require to master my songs.

How Were 388s Originally Shipped To Stores?

Both me and a friend had 388's and they had cardboard boxes. Maybe they shipped box in a box but not how we got them from the store. I remember how sketchy it was transporting them in the box.

Acoustic guitar + Electric guitar amp for home recording

Sounds to me that nothing is going to sound good in your room from what you said. I have a SCXD that I have used for recording and I can make it not muddy very easy. That said I mostly go direct and use amp and cab sims.

    normalize vox?

I stand corrected. I didn't think that through before typing. Sorry for the confusion.

    normalize vox?

Backing off the mic will actually smooth things out a bit plus eliminate proximity effects. The downside is that you will pick up more of the room sound and any other ambient noises. As you already experienced, you need to crank up your input level which can add noise that in my case is a...

What is missing from my studio that is important?

That's a good question. Im not for or against guns but I do think having something for home defense is a good idea. If I am ever in a situation where I need a military type weapon just shoot me.

    Bought another amp

I love many of the old tube amps but I've always been a fender guy at heart. Unfortunately my back hates them so I have cleared out much of the heavy gear in favor of newer lighter stuff. I'm 66 and still gig here and there so I need gear I can carry. My newest amp is a Quilter Aviator Cub and I...

What is missing from my studio that is important?

I am very fortunate because the electric lines where I live are underground so power outages are very rare. I do have a generator and emergency lights but have never used them. We have those as well as a backup food supply, water and other supplies in the event something very bad happens.
