Reaper By The Numbers: Following Kenny Gioia's Tutorial Videos

Im not sure there is a great way to extend a cymbal like that. You could try stretching the audio item by alt+left dragging the edge. The cursor will turn into hand when you’re in the right spot. With “preserve pitch…” on, it is literally resynthesis, so likely to create artifacts which will...

Reaper By The Numbers: Following Kenny Gioia's Tutorial Videos

So if you make a midi item that is like a beat long, put a midi note at the beginning, then ”apply track/take effects…” you’ll end up with a one beat long audio item and don’t have to do as much menu digging and importing and trimming. Or you could do a bunch of those midi items, select all the...

Reaper By The Numbers: Following Kenny Gioia's Tutorial Videos

There are so many ways to resample a thing, and save live output is like the last one I’d go for, but ok I suppose. I’d imagine the MT samples are already on your machine somewhere though…

    Reaper Effects question.

Do you really need that automatic switching? Are you actually trying to use the same exact controls for different parameters just randomly, or are there specific unique fx you want to adjust from anywhere? It doesn’t super have to be either/or, but with just one controller, it can be a bit...

DI boxes. How exactly they work??

They’re generally not expected to dissip that power. You would wire the DI parallel to an actual load (speaker etc). The impedance of the DI is so high that almost no current flows through its path. This is really the main reason for the -40db pad on most passive DIs.

Reaper won't record MIDI notes played on the VST (only on controller)

IF the plugin actually sends out MIDI when you click its keys or play its sequencer, THEN you could right-click the track’s record arm button and find the option to record output (midi). I don’t know that plugin so can’t tell you if it actually has midi output.

Not another +4db thread - but more specific to level behavior.

Yes, that is not right. 0dbVU can be anything it wants. Often it is +4dbu. -18dbFS can be anything it wants. Less often, it is +4dbu. In plugins and DAWS, often 0dbVU = -18dbFS, but at that point nobody cares about actual voltages or dbu.

how do i get a stereo chorus effect from a single track? Panned left and right. not center.

I’m sure this doesn’t actually help, more just trivia… The most iconic ”stereo chorus” effect for guitar is probably the one in the Roland JC amps which is basically the same as the old Boss Stereo Chorus. Both of these create their stereoness by running one side completely dry and clean and...

Headphone or speaker as a microphone

Way back in the day, I used to run sound for a lot of rave parties. One time a DJ asked if I had a microphone, which nobody had ever asked for before, so of course I didn’t. He was like “ok, I’ll just use my spare headphones.” I was like “What? Oh! Ooohhhhh.” Ever used a microphone as a...

Looking for way to record video with editable audio

OBS? It has some plugins right inside it, but there are also ways you could send the audio through a DAW where you can do whatever you want and the stream that into OBS for recording.

Show your guitar, bass, acoustic, any stringed instrument harem!

Oh thats just there to help secure/hide the GK3 lump. It is an actual set neck guitar, though, and very playable after a little work on the frets.

Show your guitar, bass, acoustic, any stringed instrument harem!

These are my main electrics. There’s a couple more kicking around in various states of disrepair, and all the acoustic things are in the bedroom. Then I’m “babysitting” a whole other collection which are mostly on the floor in this same room, but not pictured. Most of these were pretty cheap...

    Help with REAPER

    1. You probably need to go into Preferences and change audio devices. 2. There are settings in Preferences for track defaults. 3. Go in the Action List, find the action bound to Ctrl+R and add or change the shortcut.

    wondering why

Have ya tried it? I never said it was ideal. You in fact quoted the part where I said “not as hot as you’d like”. I think you’re overstating a bit, though. People have done it and are doing it and will do it. Yes a transformer is better. Actually a real preamp is even betterer. Not...

    wondering why

Thankfully most guitar amps have a shit ton of gain available. ;)

    wondering why

We don’t much care about the impedance, but there’s probably a voltage step up there which could help quite a lot. An XLR>TS cable (or simple modification of the TRS to short the R to the S) would work, but might not be as hot as you’d like.

    Mastering without compression?

The VST versions which work in other DAWs are not necessarily completely up to date, but ReaComp has worked as a decent limiter for quite a while. It’ll also do hard clipping and newer versions (not the VSTs) will work pretty well as a lightweight saturation as well. In Reaper itself we also...

    Capo

I’m much the same way. I can find any chord you want. I can tune up or down from standard and still find my way around. Put a capo on, and I’m immediately lost. Also like I can generally figure out what somebody else is playing by looking at their hands, but not if they’re using a capo. My...

    Mastering without compression?

LOL. IDK where you learned this kinda math, but... ;) Anyway of course it's a good idea to try to control your peaks at the mix level, but it's not actually always very easy to do that by limiting individual tracks because those tracks all add together, and in most cases they add together...
