I would like to pick-up a Shure SM58, but I've heard the newer mics are not as good. Is that true ? and if so, how old do you have to go to make the difference? 70s, 80s, ????

Anyone know the cause of one note bass ? I've read how it can be fixed, but I'm not thrilled about the solution (cutting just that exact freq with an eq) any other suggestions on avoiding the dreaded "one note bass".

I just bought a Focusrite VoiceMaster. It has a section called "Vintage Harmonics" which the company describes as a technique started in the 70s of recording a vocal with the dolby "On" and playing it back "Off" does this actually add 2nd and 3rd order harmonics or is it really just a treble...

Just curious, is the output buss of a master ever pushed beyond 0db (into clipping) to make it louder ? Or is the loudness always the result of a high quality recording with high quality mastering.

When I master my own mix track I put the limiter and maximizer on the stereo output buss, but I thought it sounded better to use the EQ on the channel track. Does it matter where the inserts go? I assume its always on the output buss?

How common is stem-mastering now, in regards to present day DAW mixes. If I want to send out a mix to be mastered is it the more accepted practice ?

Just bought a Focusrite FireWire pro 14, surprizingly the latency is a bit higher than the M-Audio PCI 2496 card I have. It also seems the Focusrite wants a higher buffer setting to run the DAW as well as the PCI card. I'm thinking I may return it until I can afford an RME or lynx PCIe card...

I always use some compression(outboard unit) before I go into my DAW. However I've noticed If I put a compressor as an insert in Cubase 5 its on the recorded signal. Is this the same thing? Can you use a Plug-in to get a better signal etc, the same as an outboard unit?
