    Pulling the trigger

Yeah, I would get REAPER. You can download it for free and try it for as long as you want....for free. It's not crippled at all in any way when you use the trial version. It's fully functional and does everything any other DAW will do....and more....for $60. I think some people stay away from it...

Question about proximity to microphone when singing live.

Oh, I get it now. I was slow. You mean people wanted whatever she was using, thinking that was why she sounded so good. I thought an "X" was a specific piece of equipment or something. :D

Question about proximity to microphone when singing live.

Great post. But what's an X?

Question about proximity to microphone when singing live.

Like many things, it depends. In this case, it depends on the mic, the singer, the room, etc... Usually, a dynamic mic is used live. Something like an SM58 (or 57)....When I sing live, my lips are literally touching the mic pretty much all the time. In the studio, you might want to back up a...

    Live to tape.

It's my second favorite live album...after Made In Japan.

    Live to tape.

I don't know if it's really the only one, but I've heard several times from several sources that this is the only live Rock album that had no tracks added/erased/replaced. Supposedly, what you hear is what was played. I don't know if that's true, but it seems to be "common knowledge". I believe...

    double tracking

Honestly, regardless of everything I've said, a good ADT plug-in works just fine. When I get lazy, which lately seems to be all the time, I'll throw an ADT on it and Bob's your uncle. :)

    double tracking

It's the old "It depends". But, more often than not, I'll make a folder, put both tracks in there, and lower one of them until it's just thickening the vocal instead of making it sound like 2 different tracks. I'll also often do something like keep the second track lower during the verses, but...

    double tracking

Totally understandable. I'm sure there are many things I can't get my head around that you'd find second nature. I think it's human nature to say "How can anyone find this hard?" when something comes easy to us. :)

When did I say you suck?

    double tracking

Well yeah....But I don't think the time to double track is while you're still figuring out the song. You would double track after you you've decided on a melody, recorded it and are comfortable with it.

Yeah, I probably didn't come up with the best comparison. But still......:)

    double tracking

Personally, and I'm just throwing this out there for conversation's sake, not responding to anything anyone said..... I've so often heard/read people say show hard it is to sing the same thing twice. I just don't get that. How can that be hard? How can someone not be able to write a melody and...

    double tracking

Exactly. It never sounds as natural. A person doubling his own voice will never sing both parts exactly the same, no matter how tight they are. That's why plug-ins that try to create ADT (Automatic Double Tracking) do more than just "Clone" a signal. They'll usually have some kind of "Wow" and...

    double tracking

Interesting. I've never thought of that. Sometimes I want my DT's to blend and sound like one voice. But other times, I've tried to make it sound like 2 different people. So, I've tried goofy stuff like singing in a nasally "John" voice for one track and then a rounder "Paul" voice for the...

Amp Sim - Mono/Stereo/Mono Input Stereo Channel? How Are You Doing It?

....unless you forgot to mention one step in your process, like "nudging" one of the tracks a few milliseconds forward (or backward I guess). Even that might be the worst way to create "stereo", but at least it will give you some separation. But simply cloning and nothing else will just give...

Amp Sim - Mono/Stereo/Mono Input Stereo Channel? How Are You Doing It?

No it doesn't. It's just mono. This has been discussed to death. I'm not going to keep arguing about it because that horse has been dead for a long, long time. All you're doing is creating a louder mono track. It's not stereo, it's not even pseudo-stereo. In fact, it's not even dual mono...

Amp Sim - Mono/Stereo/Mono Input Stereo Channel? How Are You Doing It?

Sorry man, that doesn't create anything close to stereo. That's just a louder mono track. Cloning a mono signal doesn't automatically change it to stereo. You need either 2 distinct performances, or some kind of chorus effect to turn mono into stereo.

    Copy/Paste MIDI

Yeah, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to just copy and paste MIDI items. It doesn't have to be complicated. You definitely don't HAVE to use the piano roll. I can't replicate your problem, either. I don't use MIDI a lot. But I use it enough to be able to say that I copy and paste MIDI...
