Yet Another Buro Klok Rough Mix (#3)

Big change! This is the first rough mix with the *real* singer. And, this is also the first mix I think sounds *better* at home than in my studio. I think the main reason is that I realized I mixed the drums much higher than most of the commercial mixes I compared with. Not so any longer. I'm...

Next rough mix: Toys for guns

A political song, no less! :-) http://www.easypublisher.com/downloads/buro_klok_-_toys_for_guns.mp3 And as usual: yes, I know I can't sing. This time the sound of the vocals suck too, not just the vocals themselves. Thats what you get for trying out your SM57. :-) Anyhoo, the vocals will not...

    Buro Klok - Rough Mix

I made rough mixes with my singing of four songs to give to my singer to learn the songs, and also for me as first rough mixes. After listening to them at home I cringed in shame by the mere thought of letting you guys listen to them, but I cringed the least with this song Alternative download...

    NOT listening to the mix.

It's funny how useful it is to not listen to the mix, but just have it going in the background, while you do the dishes, take a shower or write bullshit on HR.COM. :) I discovered that my last three mixes are lacking in the bass department. Theres no oompf in the kicks, and my bass sounds are...

    Scary!

Yesterday when mixing a song I suddenly notices a large hum on channel 5 of my Fostex A-8LR. If that channel stops working I suddenly only would have 6 free audio channels, since ch8 is consistently used for syncing the MC-50. Not good. I fiddles around with the Fostex a while, and after...

    Malström: Awesome stuff!

I can't help myself, I have to rave about the new synthesizer module in Reason 2.0: Malström. It's a "granular table synthesis", i.e. a wave table, similar to the Waldorf PPGs and Waves. It sounds so good! Problem is that I would need a new computer in my studio to really use it, so it's going...

    Help, help (a horrible Heffalump)!

I've written a text which I'm not happy with a line in it. It goes like this: So we got swept into your swirl you are a special type of girl <- Glaaah. how come you can make us walk the other way live another day when you laugh what more will you steal And the second line just makes me...

    MIDI patch bay?

DACS makes a MIDI patch bay. Brilliant stuff, it seems, and not too expensive either.... until you realize it HAS to be mounted in a 19" rack, cause it has no casing, and hence cant be used as is. The means I need to buy a 19" rack too, which doubles the price, basically. Hmm... Does anybody...

Wouldn't POD need a mic emulator too?

It struck me why I mayeb don't like speaker emulators. They emulate the SPEAKERS of an amp, but not the mic picking up the sound. So how can I then expect a lined POD to sound like a Fender Twin miced by an SM57? Am I right or what? Why have nobody thought of that?

I need a volume knob! Advice: preamp or homebrew?

I need a volume knob between my mixer and my monitors (which has no volume control). Should I by a hifi preamp, or is there another good alternative? I don't need to boost the signal, so theoretically I could just hook up a potentiometer to attenuate the signal, but it dosn't feel to good doing...

    What monitors do you use?

I thought this would be an interesting little poll.

    Subwoofer recommendations?

I'm very happy with my new Tonnoy Reveal Actives. But (as for most small nerfields) the low bass is kinda weak. It's speced down to 62 Hz, and Chemical Brothers just isn't as fun without that low rumble. :) It's no problem now, but during summer or autumn I might actually try to record some...

Mini shootout: Art Tube MP vs Line Audio DP1

Art Tube MP: Single channel microphone tube preamp. Price in Sweden: 1500 SEK. Line Audio DP1: Dual channel microphone preamp. Price in Sweden: 3200 SEK. Today, after a weekend of rewiring the power in my "studio", I finally got around to testing the new mic preamp, the DP1. I already had a...

Fostex A-8 drive belt falling off

Three times now, my the capstan drive belt on my Fostex A-8 has fallen off. This happens "in between uses", not while I'm running it. And since it takes 15 minutes to open the damn thing up and put it on again, it's VERY annoying. Anybody else have this problem? Is there anything I can do?

    Behringer ULTRAGAIN® PRO MIC2200: good/bad?

There is very little said about this product here, but when it is mentioned it is mentioned in good words. It fits what I need: A cheap 2-channel mic preamp. But how does it compare to the Art Tube MP and the Presonus Blue tube?

    Any experience with EBS?

I was thinking of maybe adding some pedals to improve my bass sound a bit. Of course, here in Sweden, the Swedish EBS stuff is highly praised, but I don't know if thats just patriotism or what... So does any non-swede have any experence with any EBS equipment, the pedals in particular?

    Oooh, cool: Acoustic Fabrics

http://www.unnadesign.com/Sidor/still.htm Made to have specific acoustic properties AND look good. Unfortunately, they don't seem to be mass produced (yest at least) and so the will be horrendously expensive. :( Some fabrics are hanging in a display in the Stockholm Subway (Odenplan, om nån...

OK, so I'm getting new heads...

What should I get? It's a reasonably good Tama set, and with the clear single-ply heads I have now, I can't get rid of ringing overtones. I want a much deader sound, and it's for recording the set. I'm not close micing (I only have two good mics) but are gonna put the mics a couple of feet away...

Track sheets and patch panel sheets

Some drafts of this can be found here: http://www.liberalism.nu/sheets/ It's in excel format (and made for A4 paper, so you americans probably have to move around things). Tell me what you think. Don't expect the link to work for more than a month or so.
