Compressors for a home studio (?)

I'm thinking of getting rid of my nanocomp and getting a good rack unit (and trying not to spend a fortune). Many people say not to get the Alesis 3630 but to get Behringer. There are two Behringer units within my reach, so what do you think about these? Behringer MDX1400 Autocom® Pro...

    4-track & 8-track cassettes (?)

I've been using a Tascam Portastudio (414) 4-track and I'm getting my Tascam 488 mkII 8-track in the mail tomorrow. I have a tape that I call "samples", which I use to try things out, so I erase and record over it many times. Is this not a good idea? I mean will the tape eventually deteriorate...

    Hollowbody Bass Guitars

I also started this topic on talkbass.com forum. I don't see people talking a lot about hollowbody or archtop basses. Let's hear from some folks who use them. What are some good ones available right now, etc. Include "beatle" basses, etc.

    Fretless bass players? (strings)

I have 2 fretless basses - a mexi Fender Jazz (with "fret" lines) and a 1973 Gibson Ripper fretless (no lines). I've been experimenting with flatwound strings for a while. I learned that I DON'T like Fender flatwounds - they sound too muddy, but there are better strings (they have a lion on the...

    Hartke Guitar Cabs?

I was at a friend's house and in his basement I noticed a pair of Hartke 4x10 XL cabinets with aluminum cones. I thought: sweet bass cabs. But they turned out to be guitar cabs, it even said so on them. My friend said, they were only made for a limited time. They sounded pretty clean, but he...

    The Russian made Oktava mics?

Guitar Center sells these Russian Oktava mics. There's one - a large condenser- I think it's called MK-319 or something like that. Any comments on those?

    CAD Equitek E-1000 ...

I have a couple of these (only cost me $80 each) and I like them, especially for acoustic guitar and drum overheads. Does anybody else use 'em? How do you like them? I just don't have much to compare to. I have 3 Audio Technica "Midnight Blues" mikes and E-1000 is noticeably better, though for...

    The Pearl Rhythm Traveler set

I got this set about 3 months ago. I know it doesn't sound like a regular set, but I'm thoroughly enjoying it - it sounds good, easy to tune (single-headed toms), easy to take with you to a session. And yeah, it's affordable (cost me $350), but it sounds much better than a regular set costing...

So what's a good acoustic bass guitar?

Does anybody know a really good acoustic bass guitar? Please exclude Carlo Robelli of SamAsh. I tried Fender's, but it didn't impress me at all. It may sound allright plugged-in, but acoustically - nah, it couldn't compete with an acoustic unplugged guitar. There was one that really impressed me...

    my bass sucks

A little more info would help (I hate to be giving advice that might just be irrelevant). 1)What's the brand? 2)What are the pickups/configuration (how many, what type/size)? 3)How does it sound live? How does it sound unplugged (unamplified)? 4)How do you record it (straight into the...

    Triggers & Drum Machines

Hi, all! I've got a Boss Dr.660 drum machine and I'd like to put triggers on my acoustic drumset. Can this drum machine be used as the "brain"? If so, how would I connect all the triggers? Is there a device that would "mix" them into the MIDI port and would the drum-machine still let me assign...

    Cassette 8-tracks...

I currently have a Tascam Portastudio 04 - it's a simple 4-track, but I want an 8-track now (didn't know they existed on tape). There's 2 - Tascam 488 mk and Yamaha's similar model. For some reason Tascam's 488 is not on their website and not offered in most on-line stores (musiciansfriend.com)...
