A fifth of whiskey and a cold Friday night. Myself and my good friend decided to write and record a song. Over the next few days I've tried to mix it. Obviously, the singing isn't the best and there are some minor mistakes in the playing but that can all be chalked up to our alcohol consumption...
I have an opportunity to trade a shure sm 58a for my rode m3. under normal circumstances I would say yes except that I have a pair of m3s a nd I don't really want to split it up for 1 mic because it sucks getting stuck with 1 half of a pair.
The point is, to those of you who own the Beta 58a...
So I understand polar patterns, how they work and whatnot. That's all well and good. What I don't understand is what application one would use wide cardioid for instead of regular cardioid. I'm gonna try it out tonight at a rehearsal, but the question remains: When would one prefer to use wide...
Interested? Make me an offer.
The m3s come with hard plastic cases, clips and windscreens. The at2021 come with pleather soft case and clip (though I will be sure that it gets packed well for shipping).
Pics are forthcoming. I have 100% rating on eBay and when I remember my user name, I will...
These two instruments seem to collide in my mixes, especially when working on live recordings. It seems the the banjo lives in the same frequencies as the mid/high regions of the piano and I'm not sure how to not have one swamp the other. Any ideas on how to make the banjo stand out without...
Here's the setup of the band I recorded last night. I used the pair of M3s in front, the AT2020 in the rear of the piano, the AT4040 on the bass, the SM57 on the banjo, the Apex 435 over the drums and took the vocals from the board.
All in all, the recording sounds pretty good, I think...
Tonight, I'll be getting paid to record a live band. Yay! Go me!! I guess I'm getting better and ppl are willing to give me a shot.
BUT! I need some advice.
The band consists of drums, three or four horns (trumpet, 2x sax, trombone), upright piano, upright bass, banjo and several vocalists -...

I asked in another thread about recommended online retailers but threads get quickly forgotten around these parts, so I decided to start a new one.
It'd be helpful, I think, to have a thread of recommended online microphone retailers for those that are constantly asking about which mic to buy...
I love it when this time of year comes around (it ends up being about quarterly for me) and I've managed to squirrel away enough moolah to go gear shopping. This time around, I'm looking at adding a nice mic to my slowly growing locker. I've got my eye on either the Shure SM7b or a nice tube...

My third mix for the MP3 Mixing Clinic!!
So I didn't record the instruments for this track but I did mix it. The source material was recorded at weird levels, and much was distorted. I tried to make it sound as best I could... If anybody hears...
So what do you guys use your dark-sounding mics on? Seems to me that unless one's already got a locker full of mics, it's not really worth investing in say, a dual-ribbon that one would probably only use as a once-in-a-while secondary mic on a guitar cab. What other uses have you guys found for...
What do you guys think about this mix? I'd like it to be a little fuller sounding but damn that accordion is hard to mix!
Following some advice that I got here on the last track I posted, I tried to make sure that the vocals were crisp, clear and easy to understand and tried to take it easy on...
Sometimes, when I read certain articles about setting up mics for stereo XY recording, I see the illustrations of the mics with one on top of the other and sometimes their grills are almost touching on a horizontal plane.
A quick and dirty illustration of what I mean:
Setup A: Mic grills...
People are always complaining that my vox are really low in a mix, even when they seem (to my ears) to be clear. I'm hoping you guys wouldn't mind having a listen to two songs and letting me know how you feel about the mix.
On the one hand, I want all the elements of a song to be balanced but...
So many of you on this board seem to hear all kinds of tiny little nuanced differences in the sound of various microphones that completely elude my ears. I can hear the obvious differences between say, an Audio-Technica AT2020 and the AT4040, or the differences between a Rode M3 and an SM58 (:p)...
...are the bane of my existance. Geez! Why? For the love of god, WHY?
Anyway, is there a difference between their old 414b TL2 and the ULS? I'm trying to buy one from some guy and he says it's a TL2, but the pics of the mic have both TL2 & ULS markings on it. I need me a multi-pattern...
Boss BR-600 - Awesome portable recording studio. You can record, mix and master a whole record in this device and export the audio in WAV format to burn to a CD - even create drum patterns on the built-in drum machine... No need to pay big money for a recording studio!! I'll include a couple 1...
Just came across one of these guys for sale (used) and was thinking about scooping it up, as I don't yet have a ribbon mic in my locker... have any of you used it before? Is it decent (as in, $130 worth of decent)? Also, I know about the fragility of ribbons, so what's the best way to check out...
