How far can I run a mouse, keyboard, and monitor cable? My home computer is upstairs, but I would also like to be able to control it from the studio in the basement. Are long runs like this acceptable?

when wiring up insert cables, what do you do with the ground? I assume you can just use balanced cable, split the pos. and neg. to the tip and ring of the TRS end, but what do you do on the two TS ends? Is there special insert cable with seperate grounds to positive and negative?

I just got some new bulk mic cable, the kind with the braided shield. Unfortunatley, most of my cables have a terrible hum to them. I have determined this is the grounding of the cable. My question is, is there a certain way to twist the braided shield so that there are no shorts etc....right...
