    Newbie

Has there been a single new poster from the LA Film school or wherever doing their assignment who has come back here after the initial post? I mean in a new thread.

    Focusrite 8i6 line inputs

Maybe something like the Presonus TubePre? Around $40.00 or so on Ebay.

Need help identifying a jack on a TEAC 3 mixing board

How about some Deoxit into the XLRs? Shouldn't that help clean up the innards of the plug?

Now seems to be the time, what VST brands are your favorite?

Well, there's Slate, and Acustica, both of whom make fantastic plugins. Slate just came out with an Auto-tune type of plug, which is getting very good reviews.

How much of a difference will upgrading an audio interface make?

The big thing would be reliability. When you're buying the expensive stuff, there might be a slight difference that you might hear, but the expensive stuff lasts. At least it better. Build quality is better. And always buy new. I'm still getting over violating my own rules when I bought a used...

    Latest gear issue - mixer

Try the old "buttons in - buttons out" if you haven't already. That is, rapidly pushing any buttons connected with that channel in and out. I've had problems with my Soundcraft GB2R every once in a while, with a channel going out, or very low, and that's worked.

If you run out of gain mixing tracks , should you compress it for more volume?

"level was supposed to come from the comp." Keep the compressors off the Master bus, but if they're on there, go real easy. I use Acustica's Aquamarine4 Opto on the Master bus, but the gain reduction needle move almost imperceptably. Depending on the mix, I use the compressor's output to...

Using computer solely for guitar effects? Latency?

There is no conversion. The PODxt is simply a device in-line with analog ins and outs. It has a usb port for updates and all, but it's all analog in and out.

If you run out of gain mixing tracks , should you compress it for more volume?

In all honesty, what others have said is true. That mix you posted does not sound good, and you seem to be obsessed with technical stuff that ultimately doesn't mean anything as far as a good mix goes. You're going way overboard with EQ. It's always best to use as little EQ as possible, and...

If you run out of gain mixing tracks , should you compress it for more volume?

Depends on the track, the song. What do you mean by "filter" the distorted guitars at those fequencies? Do you mean across that whole range? A dip? I usually do not have any compression on heavily distorted guitars.

If you run out of gain mixing tracks , should you compress it for more volume?

Exactly so. Separate buses for each group, with vocals on their own bus and backing vocals on another bus. You should never be running out of gain, so to speak--just drop down the other buses, and the vocals are in the mix higher.

Using computer solely for guitar effects? Latency?

You can always go on Ebay and get an old Line 6 Pod or something like that. I picked one up for $60.00 no problem. They can be updated from Line 6's website at no cost. No latency ever of course. I use them everyday, and almost every recording I do has electrics on it that use the Pod. I...

50's Country Band Recorded TV Performance

Definitely lip-synced--you can see that at the beginning quite clearly where Buckaroo's mouth movements aint matching up too well. The guitar solo by Don Rich looks faked as well, so likely the whole thing is. I read up on Owens (and Rich) on Wikipedia; it's a sad and interesting story. Check...

Is my mix really that SQUASHED???

Right off the bat, there's a tremendous amount of mid-low end rumble and booming in your mastered and unmastered versions. I listened to the reference track by Mogwai, and the problems you're having are not present in their track (no surprise). So EQ is the main problem here--not enough...

I would like to reduce the size of a music file.

I don't know enough about the copyright process (I actually started it for some songs), but that seems unlikely.

Tascam 388 Track 1 and 8 weak muddy playback

There's always computers and DAWS and tape emulation plugins, but I guess there's the sheer joy of fiddling with tape machines.

I would like to reduce the size of a music file.

Why do you need to make them smaller? For an Mp3 player? Drive space is cheap nowadays--a 4 terrabyte drive will hold a shit-ton of WAV files. I mean, you're still going to have the same amount of songs, right? What difference does it make as to how big the files are? Unless you want them...

    Using limiters on Mix busses?!

I realize this string is old, but . . . . A little less "mastering" and a lot more mixing should be the order of the day. The original advice from mjb stands--volume automation. It works on drum busses, vocal tracks, guitar tracks, everything, and I should know because I use it routinely and...
