I've recorded more than a few rappers/R+B singers, and virtually all of them licensed beats/tunes from a beat-maker on the internet. Depending on the type of license, you could make money off the beats with your own additions (almost always just vocals), but after a few thousand sales, you got...
If someone's track (stereo song, or piece of music) is a "blue brick" once you've got it in Audacity, somebody is doing something wrong--either you, with something going on in Audacity, or the person responsible for the original song or "piece," as you put it. In Samplitude, my DAW, there is a...
Do check out the plethora of very good, relatively cheap powered speakers (nearfields) by Kali and other manufacturers. The strides being made in speaker technology are amazing. Also, try Ebay for a used Adcom amp, if you do get speakers that need an amp. (I have two of them). They're quite...
I would get an ART DTI (Dual Transformer Isolator) box (about 65 dollars), and go from there. 1/4" TRS jacks into the DTI from the Focusrite and RCA cables out of the DTI and into your stereo. Make sure you don't jack up the output of the Focusrite too much, or you'll overload the inputs on...
I just listened in my desktop iLoud speakers, and the guitar is hanging in the same frequency range as the synth(s), which is problematic. In the headphones (Audio Technica AH-50x) the mix and guitars actually sound better to me. This is very subjective of course. What speakers are you using...
I second the recommendation for CAD mics. Go to Ebay and look for CAD drum mic packs. Those are solid mics, and the packs are often used but they offer great value for the money, believe me.
Not sure what that last sentence is doing, but any professional can get "a professional sound space" even with freeware plugs. Post up examples of your mixes.
No, you can do that of course. I set up each instrument/vocal with it's own Auxes--2 of them, with one for reverb and the other for delay. Only specific instruments are sent to those Aux sends and the returns (color-coded to match whatever track(s) they're associated with) are sent to the...
"(The recording) is not about reality." (16:34 or so) Exactly! What a great interview! I like that the interviewer asked the question and then let Schnee expound. Unobtrusive, and he asked the right questions. Thanks for posting this!
Sorry, but it's difficult time-wise to get back in here. Check out Jesse Ray Ernster, who was interviewed, along with Clearmountain, in Tape-Op magazine in the Oct/Nov 2022 issue. Ernster is crazy for the NS-10, to the point of obsession. You'll probably feel vindicated in your own obsession.
A bit off topic, but there are some very good records out there that were transferred to CD, and utterly sucked in the format. I'm thinking of Court Of The Crimson King by King Crimson and The Idiot by Iggy Pop. Both of the CD versions I have of those records are un-listenable. I can't put my...
Why not try singing dry into the mic? (And, there may be "better mics" than the Astin, but that mic is certainly a fine microphone). No compression going in, and use as little as possible after that. Perhaps you're sub-consciously imagining that the compressor is going to do things that maybe...
