    Awesome cheap Vocal Booth

I'm a member of Amazon Vine, where I get access to free things in exchange for writing honest reviews. I took a chance and grabbed this when it was available: Amazon link It's nice and works well. I don't know if I would pay $400, but you could make the frame from PVC and drape blankets from...

Advise on proposed shed to studio conversion

If you have that small space and your gear and three people (you and two clients), it will get hot in the summer. I would be less concerned about noise and more concerned with comfort. When you're tracking, I assume you're alone and could get the room cold and turn the AC on between takes?

Advise on proposed shed to studio conversion

What are you planning for heating and cooling? The door should be changed for security, if not for the weather, altering the swing direction should be simple. I would look into a heat pump to get heating and cooling without much work. I would also frame the walls and add insulation and solid...

Question: mono tracks into stereo bus

I would import each side into a mono track and flip the phase on one to ensure it's dual mono. Seems like a PITA to me.

    editing with headphones

Your center image can be off because when you mix on speakers you don't have them strapped to your head. It makes sense when you think of it. Headphones have a tendency to make panning more dramatic.

    editing with headphones

I did all my editing with AKGs for years. When I was at Berklee that's what was in all the labs, so when it came time to buy headphones, that's what I bought. Last year I was fortunate to receive a set of Neumann headphones as a gift and I love them. They're expensive, though.

Interesting Microphones - less common mics - and tips and tricks

I have four of them. When RS went out of business (sadly) I picked them up for $5 each. The packaging makes me think they were in the store for at least 15-20 years. I have two I keep mounted to large pieces of glass and one on the back wall of my studio. The other is still in the box. The...

What video editing software do you use?

I only do a little-sophisticated editing. Most of what I do is either syncing cues to videos someone else created or promotional 'talking head' type interviews. I use Final Cut Pro. I learned most of what I've done over the years by reading the manual and about three years ago, I signed up for...

Show your guitar, bass, acoustic, any stringed instrument harem!

Here's some of the more obscure ones. I tend to hunt around and find guitars rather than buying new. Here are a few notable ones. 1963 Rickenbacker in factory Jetglo: 1954 Fender Stratocaster with 1968 Gibson Dove. If you're into maps that's a Soldano SLO-100 in EC Grey and a Dumble...

    3/4 guitar with Nashville Strings

I've been using high-strung guitar for about thirty years. I would just buy the cheapest guitar you can find at a pawn shop or flea market. I have a low end Eko Ranger and I believe it cost about $35 when I bought it, at a flea market.

AKG C1000 - the mic people hated for 30+ Years

I always thought they worked well. I would have loved a pair back in the day.

    let me see your studio!

My setup isn't all that fancy as far as being high-tech, but I try to get a good mix of analog and digital. I also have an 8 track Otari I use for drums sometimes.
