Theoretical discussion: Frankensteining an AKAI 12 track

I didn't want to hijack Steenamaroo's Akai thread. But the other day I was thinking (read "daydreaming") about this. Those Akai 12 tracks have always intrigued me, they are just so damn cool. Now, I'm not the guy to do this, but rumour has it a certain MIT type made a 1" 12 track on his own for...

    Royer Mod starting

Here are some pictures. I didn't take a lot of in progress ones though. This is the finished mic circuit, with the cap moved where it should be and the teflon post for the capsule lead: Note to self, 1/4 watt resistors are probably OK, and would surely fit nicer. Also, I could and probably...

    Phishing warning on GS

I know we were making fun of GS in another thread. But I was just lurking over there and this warning popped up, so FYI: I've received similar kinds of crap on emails re: clist ads. "Please confirm this is the model I'm looking this is the one I'm looking for: (url to who knows what....)"

    Tapco 12x4

Somebody please buy this. $80.00. The ad is killing me ...slowly and painfully. I do not need another mixer. But I want it. It has transformer coupled mic pres. It's says I can be modded and messed with and I'm only $80.00 It's worth it just for that. FAP - Surplus Property:Item...

    MXL V69 Mod suggestions

I picked up a V69 a few weeks ago, as a mod platform for a G7. But the body is about 1/2 inch too short for the G7 PCB. So, inviting suggestions: Should I 1. Leave stock 2. Replace teh capsule with a 47 clone 3. #2 and a BigUgly Royer mod (dual capsule) 4. Replace capsule with a dual k67 clone...

    Another backward capacitor

I don't know why this keeps happening. Well, I'm finally getting around to some DIY. inter alia have a PRR VariMu compressor. Starting with the PSU. The PCB's I got don't have a silkscreen, just holes and solder mask. I have a print out of the component layout. So I put in a few caps I had...

    Royer Mod starting

Took apart the MXL2001 (I didn't test it first, I bought it "not working" so don't know what hte problem was with it. Hopefully not capsule....) Comes apart pretty easy. Set aside the circuit boards to desolder and reuse the 1Gig resistors on the G7. Some of the resistors I got were a little...

    G7 Microphone starting

Also doing a Royer mod. Wanted to start this thread too for the HR.com. Got PCB's from offshore"" Now, finding a suitable body. There's Skylars at $300. Not sure I want to spring for that much on the first one. So looking for alternatives. A small piece of brass is about $20-30. Looking at...

    Royer Mod starting

OK, This is an oldie but a goodie. Got myself a MXL2001, not working, had some BigUgly version RoyerMod PCB's fabbed and now embarking on this. First time to do a microphone, so I'm going cheaper on this one. Got the PCB, got a 5840. The PCB is for the "BigUgly Mod" which is a mod of the...

    PAIA Reverb (for zorf)

Hey, Here is a link to the schematic: PAiA Corporation: Hot Springs Reverb Schematics The guide that came with it (by Craig Anderton) talks about wiring the springs out of phase to cancel out some of the sproinginess from springs. You can see from the diagram the + and - on the spring...

ARP Quadra (yet again) two new problems....

Well, I love this keyboard, but this is probably the 5th or 6th issue I've had with it since I bought it in 1988. So now. Problem 1, one key not firing, probably an easy fix, I haven't looked too closely at the schematic yet, Problem 2, the string section comes out distorted, the 4' string...

    FYI, Splicit has splicing blocks

and kits, for both 1/4" and 1/2" I think there were a few people looking for them a while back. I've not dealt directly with them, but I think others here have bought tape from them. Splicit Reel Audio Products - reel to reel recording supplies

Voice Logging tape (e.g. Ampex 705) (what is the difference anyway????)

OK I just gotta know. My understanding is it has a thinner layer of oxide and is optimized for slow recording. But what does that translate to? Lower freq response to capture voice only? I'm just so curious.

Teac 5 0dBv output -- interesting feature embarassed me

:o Well, I'd been using it more or less as an instrument mixer, not really paying attention much, and the switches on the back were switched to high. Then went to test out w/ the little Fostex A-8 (four busses you know...) and to my surprise 0VU on the Fostex was -7VU on the Teac 5...
