On the verge of giving up

Please listen to the following clip and tell me what the hell is happening. Can you hear the booming bass notes? Whenever this boom happens the mixer clips even at low levels. I’m using a hi quality Taylor guitar and the NTK. The boom is present to some degree no matter where I place the mic...

    unwanted pitch shift

Ok, here is the situation. When I record a guitar track on my XT-20 the recorded part is a different pitch than what I originally played. When I play a live guitar with the track I just recorded the two are slightly out of tune. When I record a second guitar track and play them back they are not...

    analog mixes to cd

Here the situation. I have been mixing down to 1/4-inch tape. I will eventually take this to a mastering engineer. The problem is that I need to listen to my mixes in other stereo systems. I don’t own a computer so I need a standalone cd burner. I guess one that records in real time. I don’t...

    Spaced pair aggravation!

Ok I’ve run into problem number 5000 Here is the deal... I am recording an acoustic guitar. The mics are 6 inches away from the guitar and 18 inches apart. One mic is at the bridge and the other is 18 inches further down the neck. (Just like the picture in the book) The sound going into the...

    Clipping but not really?

I was recording some acoustic guitar. On playback I noticed that the Adat meters hit MAX a few times. I couldn’t hear any distortion. Perhaps the peak was so quick that I just cant hear it. I don’t want to have to go though the hassle of re-recording those tracks. I’m wondering if that’s...

    703 fiberglass or equivalent

So I need more fiberglasses. Owens Corning doesn’t want to have anything to do with me. Local insulation companies are trying to sell me fiberboard and ceiling tiles. Perhaps there is another company that sells the equivalent to 703 under another name. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

    I built some coffins

I told the neighbors that I was building coffins but really its just bass traps. It pretty easy to do. If you have a basic knowledge of quantum physics you should do fine. My only mistake was using a cheap miter saw to cut the wood. The edges don’t line up properly. I made the traps portable...

Otari MX 5050 what did it cost new?

Ok I just purchased the Otari MX 5050 2 track for 50 dollars. I am wondering how much that unit cost brand new. How do I clean mixer?

Ok So I have this secondhand mackie 1604 mixer. The thing is covered with dust and is pretty neglected. None of the nobs are scratchy but I think that its a little noisy, hums buzz ect. How should I clean it. Should I dismantle it and spray it with compressed air or is that certain death.

    muddy thumpy boomy crappy recording.

First of all I would like to thank everyone who has helped me in the past. I really appreciate. I underestimated how difficult this really is. I am stereo micing my acoustic guitar (Taylor 414 grand) with 2 sm-81. I am having a problem with muddy unfocused bass. The treble strings sound fine...

    Problem with spaced pair.

Ok, so I am using 2 sm -81 to mic my acoustic guitar. One mic is pointed near the bridge. The other is pointed at the 12 fret. The problem is that one side is always louder than the other. Is this normal? If I move the mics so both sides are equal volume then the bass treble balance is wrong...

    External Adat noise

I am tracking in the same room that I am recording in. The problem is that in the deathly quite of my room I can hear the adat growling and whirling. Perhaps my machine is particulary noisy. I could throw a blanket over the thing but it might over heat. I could monitor in another room but the...

Rnp gain... Im doing it wrong!

I am having trouble setting levels on my preamp. The manual for my Adat xt 20 says that the average level on the display should be at -15. When I play acoustic guitar, I have to crank the Rnp gain knob up to 54 (I believe mabey 56) in order to read -15 on the Adat. Even then the peaks that...
