    Decoding DBX Tapes

My first 'experiments' were made with mics & instruments plugged directly into the machine - bypassing a board. A bit limited, to be sure, but very clean signals.

    Decoding DBX Tapes

Thanks for all the info. Funny - I always lamented the fact my 3440 recordings were not made using NR. But after hearing them recently, the hiss & noise are barely noticeable; making me wonder if it may have been overkill on the 80-8. (Teac really had a nice product all those years ago.)

    Decoding DBX Tapes

I have analogue recordings that were made with a DBX DX-8 unit. Is there a way to decode these tapes without using the outboard unit? Can these be decoded with software?

    Reaper Effects Question

Talking about the delay and dry signal. The pan control doesn't work for me - it weakens the signal - dilutes it. I'm thinking the FX on each track are for just that, adding an effect to just that channel, not for any stereo effects. The send technique with an effects track above is probably the...

    Reaper Effects Question

Thanks - this way seems to work the way I'd like, but each track shares the same delay settings. If each track has its own effect applied to it, I can then change the time, but with the dry signal set to minimum, there's no stereo balance in this configuration, it seems. Probably something...

Thanks - makes sense - will try that.

    Reaper Effects Question

I've been dabbling with some of the effects in reaper, and one thing I can't seem to get a hold of: When I used to record in the past, I would sometimes pan the signal to one side, and a delay to the other. The result was a fuller sound, but with the effects that are included, the result is not...

    Transferring Multitrack Reels Into Computer?

OK - thanks - a lot of info. (Haven't learned how to use the envelope function yet.) Just yesterday, I noticed an electrical 'click' on one of the songs, so maybe this would be a good way to eradicate it.

    Transferring Multitrack Reels Into Computer?

One thing I’m still unsure about is recording levels. I’ve been working on a piece that is very long, and contains both quiet and loud passages. I set the levels to avoid clipping when drums, percussion, etc. are present, but this has resulted in very low levels when playing back the track in...

    Transferring Multitrack Reels Into Computer?

Halfway into this project (about 35 reels transferred) and I'm pleasantly surprised at how good good some of the material sounds. (Only 1 screw-up with Scotch Tape - the other 95% are Maxell.) Teac was a godsend to the home recording market at that time. Just ask this guy:

Thanks - all the info does help, and I will take into account all the great suggestions.

    Transferring Multitrack Reels Into Computer?

Hum is present also through the headphone jack, so it's there without hooking up to the interface. There are 8 XLR inputs. It's fairly quiet, but if I have to boost levels on some material, it's not (post #211 has a sample.)

    Transferring Multitrack Reels Into Computer?

Not recording, only transferring. Maybe someone with the same deck can listen through headphones and see if the same occurs. (As it's also noticeable through the headphone jack on the front panel, with the unit idling.)

    Transferring Multitrack Reels Into Computer?

Here is the mp3: Starting with no output knobs engaged, channel 1, then 2, etc. are added, one at a time.

This is reaper 6.53. The pic shows the noise levels at the settings indicated. Will post a sample tomorrow.

    Transferring Multitrack Reels Into Computer?

My first impression that something was up was a 'flickering' level on track 2 when the deck was idle, even though it was way down on the dB scale. Some of the material needed boosting, so I did that through the interface, but this also brought up this noise that was previously basically...

    Transferring Multitrack Reels Into Computer?

Thanks, but I don't think it's a ground loop, after all. I plugged into the headphone jack on the Teac itself, turned all the way up, and hear what sounds to me like the normal operating noise. Though I may be wrong, and these machines are really dead quiet at this volume. (Not sure, unless...

    Transferring Multitrack Reels Into Computer?

    >See if grounding the Teac to the Clarett and see if the hum goes away. How would I do this?

    Transferring Multitrack Reels Into Computer?

I see. I do miss the old analog meters where you could venture into the red with no real consequences.
