Why -6? I thought the best level is -18dB.

So by me reducing the signal in reaper, and rendering again, it basically has no effect? And the only way to reduce a hot signal would be to ride the 3340's knobs? (I see the use of a 'volume smoother' plug-in to achieve this on-line.) All I want is to have the faders at 0, with no clipping...

Thanks. These will only be for storing projects as they are completed - just audio, no video. I have a mac with a thunderbolt connection, which I guess is the fastest for this set-up. Yes, I know I will need 2, and was thinking of a raid, but they are pretty expensive, as I see.

I'm quickly running out of space on my mac, so am looking for an external drive. I've used both G-Drive and Lacie drives, but now see contrasting reviews about their reliability (though that's to be expected when researching anything.) The Toshiba drives look promising, but the same confusing...

One thing slightly confusing to me is when I increase an input (say 3dB) when playing back the take, its 'mix' fader is up by 3 dB. (I thought it would be at 0.) Wouldn't this negate the dB increase if you return this fader back to 0?

I discovered this today when I had to boost a very low signal, and saw that +12 was the max I could increase it.

Normalizing has me a little confused. If the signal to noise is no problem, why normalize? Shouldn't the levels be fine as they are?

The more tapes I transfer, the more varying levels I'm encountering. I'm keeping it all under clipping, but wondering if I'm being too conservative; some of the levels are reading -9, -12, etc. I guess it's better to be under than over, but some of the quieter stuff I'm boosting a little, though...

Weird thing happened today while transferring a tape: Upon playback, I noticed a dropout, though it sounded more like the tape was folded. When I checked the actual tape, there was no such glitch, so it occurred during the transfer. I did the transfer again, and there was no issue. But another...

Yes - this icon disappeared when I connected the interface. As for the resample modes - these should be set to the highest quality?
