I asked a friend of mine (who asked a friend of his, ironically enough) about pitching songs. His friend passed along a link to him, which he passed along to me.
The link is...

Verse 1:
There's a lot of folks who say they're the luckiest person on earth.
They have the things they want, they love what they do
they always seem content, their skies are always blue.
Too bad what they're saying ain't true...
"borrowed", "stolen", "lifted", etc...
an idea, line, verse, etc. from someone elses song?
Just curious...I've used previous ideas, and possibly a line or two, but I don't think I've ever used an entire verse. :)
How can you tell if someone is talented when it comes to writing lyrics? Is it in the style of lyrics? Is it a clever wordplay in the lyrics? Is it use of metaphors? Is it rhyming style, meter, etc.? Is it the number of "quality" songs a person has written?
How do you tell?
These would go somewhere in a yet-to-be-written song...
I can't play for you when I lie in that field of stone
So this guitar belongs to you now, remember you're never alone
Put it on your knee, son, and play a joyful song of memory
And keep in your heart the memories of me.
What's everyone think?
If you had a song that you wanted to pitch to a particular singer/group, how would you do it? Is that even possible? What if you didn't want to pitch it to any particular singer/group, you just wanted someone (besides you or your band) to record it? How would you do that, if it's even possible...
I went ahead and signed up with BMI a week or so ago. I got my "welcome" and confirmation email today. Feels pretty cool! Now I'm just waiting for my stuff to come in the mail.
So, I'm officially a BMI songwriter!
What does it mean when you sell "rights" to your song?
If I have a song that's copyrighted, and entity "A" wants to buy the "rights" to that song, what exactly are they buying? Am I still allowed to use my song however I want, since it's copyrighted to me?
Is it more of a licensing thing...
All:
This is amusing to me. Several of you may recall that I sent a song to be copyrighted a few months ago (back in March, I believe). Anyway, over the past two weeks I have received two letters (I believe they're form letters) in the mail asking me to submit songs for review. The letters came...
This may sound like a really lame idea, but it's a bit funny, and I'm wondering if it would really work...it sounds a little like reverse psychology...
I saw an episode of "South Park" once where Cartman bought his own amusement park, and he ran advertisements with the tagline "...and nobody...
If I have a song that I've written where I own the copyright, whether the song is published or not, and I want to sell the lyrics, what steps would I take? Or perhaps an easier question, how can I license someone else to record one of my published songs (once my CD is out) if they want to do so?
Trying to decide which one of these to join. I've looked at both websites, and they both appear compelling.
Is one better than the other, or does it matter? I know I can't join both simultaneously.
I'd like opinions on these lyrics
The Other Me
This me is happy for you
This me is glad your dreams are coming true
This me says we should keep it friends
This me says he's a friend 'til the end.
(Chorus):
(But) The Other Me wants to hold you in his arms
The Other Me wants you for all time...
Is there etiquette involved in linking to a website from your own? For instance, if I want to link to a radio station in my area, should I ask permission, especially if I'm using their logo, or is it ok to just create a text link to their site?
I posted my song on SoundClick, and after I did the site said my song was too short to be listed in the charts! It's 2 minutes, 35 seconds. I guess the limit is 3 minutes, but this really bites!
Dang.
Let's say I write a song and get it copyrighted. If I wanted to pitch it to different people within the business, how would I do that? I see advertisements in magazines sometimes "songs/poems wanted", but I have a suspicion that those are mostly scams.
Has anyone ever done that? Were you...
I don't have the copyrights in place yet, and I only have it on my local computer at home, it isn't distributed anywhere. I'm happy with how it turned out! It's a 5 1/2 minute country ballad.
I'm thrilled. One down, nine more to go! Then copyrights...then distribution!
I'll be selling it on...
