Warning, this song is highly depressing, or at least aspires to be:

It is slow to develop, but I wanted that, to gradually set the mood. I know the vocals have to be top notch for this song to succeed, so I'm still sweating them here and there...
Here's my mix for a new tune, called Spinning: www.toddejones.com/songs/Spinning.mp3
I think it needs more work, but I'm too close to it right now to be objective.
I welcome your input, from fawning praise to eviscerating criticism.
Thanks,
-Zilla
I'm getting a little wary of studio pictures where everything is neat and tidy and there aren't a lot of gadgets, gee-gaws, doo-hickeys and extra junk lying around, as seems to be the case in my studio. It reminds me of kitchens in Architectural Digest where it appears actual human beings have...

This has been a monster to mix. It's prolly got over 50 tracks, some piggybacked, and different effects, moods and song parts. I think I'm about at the edge of what can be done, but maybe I'm just sick of remixing it for the umpteenth time.
What do...
I'm still a long ways off, but I feel like I'm getting closer to mix nirvana:

Still worried the kick and vocals may be too loud.
But I'm liking the drum sounds we're getting (although we gave up on the kick and...
Here's my latest work in progress:

I have no business doing Electronica, but I got Reason and had to try something with it. This is my first real Reason song. It's all Reason instruments, with a little Korg Prophecy at the end, real guitars and 17...
...but I'm sooooo glad I finished building my studio and now I'm using it for music.
I spent a good 2 and a half years getting the beast complete.

Looking for feedback on my latest tune. Please tell me whether or not it causes uncontrollable foot stomping to the point of hip displaysia. - that was my basic goal.
Now on to tackle some faux electronica...
Thanks in Advance,

Situation: Producer and Band need a place to rehearse material for upcoming CD project. Friend of a Friend recommends my place. Guys seem cool, the producer is a peer bandmate from way back. I let them know the ground rules, including a "No Smoking" policy. After their first day, the place reeks...
I've got a trumpet and sax player coming over to lay tracks for me. I'm thinking Tower of Power meets Zappa's Hot Rats with Edgar Winter's Frankenstein sax thrown in for good measure.
No, I don't have a ribbon mic for the task, but which of these would y'all start with:
Nuemann U-89

Please let me know if you think I'm zeroing in on something cool, or if it sucketh narwhal.
Thanks,

Colleagues,
Based on input received from Internet and analog sources, I've added a bunch of tracks and done a new mixdown of "The Trap."

I welcome all feedback, including the witheringly negative, before I submit this to American Idol...
Here's a tune I'm working on that I previously submitted to the Songwriting forum: www.toddejones.com/songs/The Trap.mp3.
I pretty psyched about the rough mix sound, but I'd love some honest feedback about how to make the final mix better.
thanx
Hey, y'all...
Here's my latest: http://www.toddejones.com/songs/TheTrap.mp3
I'm pretty psyched at how the production is working out on this. The choruses are nice and jangly and ready for the radio, if not for one minor detail. I'm psyched at how the drums and bass are sounding.
But I...

Looking for feedback. This song was a particular challenge for me. I'm a keyboard player by training, but this song is me on everypart, with no keyboards, no samples, no drum machines (okay, okay, there is one triangle hit in the song that is a...
Blame it on my lame ears if you want to, but...
I just don't hear the difference between a solid mid-range preamp and the boutiquey shit that people Jones for.
My mics: Neuman U-89, Crown CM-700s, AKG212, SM-57s.
My preamps: Demeter HM-1, MOTU 896HD, Art Tube MP, Mackie 1202 pre-VLZ

Okay, this is an almost finished tune. Yes, it is very 80s. I started it on my old analog deck (Fostex Model 80) and have recorded all guitars keys and vox in digital.

I going to put in a little more lead guitar and more background vocals...
I've done some analog work (Fostex 8 track 1/4"), but I finally went digital. Here's my first song: www.toddejones.com/songs/RocketScience.mp3
I would love some feedback. It's done with:
Mics: Neumann U-89, Crown CM-700s, Shure SM57
Preamps: Demeter HM1, neighbor's APIs, MOTU 896HD pres...
I shouldn't really need another mic pre. I have a Demeter HM-1, my next door neighbors have 3 channels of APIs in a lunchbox which they've let me borrow from time to time for my Neuman U-89, Crown CM700s and assorted dynamics.
...so why am I Jonesing for a Focusrite Red-7?
For the worst reason...
My daughter really wants a "kids drums set" (her words). Never mind that I have her uncle's full set of Tama's with Zildjian and Paiste cymbals in my studio, at her disposal. She wants her own kit and wants it to her scale.
So, does anyone know the relative merits of the junior kits around...
