    Tascam M30/Tascam 38-8

There is no way the M30 would add any appreciable delay when doing an overdub FYI - once aligned, the 38 should be left in sync mode. The repro head is only used for ease of alignment.

    Tascam 38 Tape Slip

I'd check the pinch roller to see if it has a glaze on it and isn't gripping properly. Clean it with a good rubber rejuvenator. Do not use head cleaner.

    Fostex g16c issues

Do you have the user's manual? See if it has a "safe" mode that might be switched on.

Would switching from a hypercardioid shotgun to a cardioid pencil mic help reduce room reverb/noise?

A corner is not a good place from which to be recorded, especially an untreated one. FYI - The corners are the 1st places I work on when trying to tame a room.

    JBL 4311 Monitors?

Believe it or not, no JBL engineer/designer had been to a recording session until the early 1970's when one was invited to one at Drew Recording on Lexington Ave. in Hollywood. I cannot remember his name but he shortly later designed the 4315 4-way monitors which is still considered among the...

    JBL 4311 Monitors?

The 4311 was an update to the 4310. I think that the tweeter is different but am not certain. I would still say that accuracy wasn't part of the design because as I recall, mixes done through them wouldn't translate all that well to other systems. 2nd guessing was the order of the day.

    JBL 4311 Monitors?

The L-100 was the consumer version of the 4310 broadcast monitor. Fancier box to fit with home decor, same drivers, BUT a different crossover network to appeal to consumer tastes. LA engineers called it, "tizz-boom disease" because of the exaggerated low & top end. The 4310 wasn't all that...

Tascam M30 and a TEAC 2300S into DAW?

The M30 was pretty good in it's day in many respects but the mic pres left a lot to be desired if one wanted clean, detailed sound with good transient response. Chances are the ones in your current interface perform better. Even the TASCAM techs acknowledged that. If you want analog tape...

    I can't believe it...

Sony purchased MCI in 1982. For a sort time their tape machines were branded as MCI/SONY's.

    Tascam 320 vs 520

There was a similar chip called the 5530 that the TASCAM tech I knew would use instead of the 5532. Supposedly, it was designed specifically for -10 device circuits whereas the 5532 was not.

Steps you can do earlier in the mix to make it easier later on?

Mix as you go. If parts 1 & 2 aren't working well together, no other added parts are going to fix it.

Recording Acoustic Guitars - mono? Stereo? Where do you stick them?

I used to do stereo from a distance for acoustic guitars that drove the track but have since gone to stereo for solo instruments and mono when the guitar is part of an ensemble.

    Tascam 320 vs 520

IMHO- TASCAM has never made a really good mic pre. They aren't awful but they lack the transient response needed to capture drums & bass to my satisfaction.

    Tascam 320 vs 520

The 500 series was more expensive than the 300 series. It probably has more function and perhaps better performance.

    mix in mono?

I worked with 1 engineer who would mix with everything in the center before re-panning for stereo.

    DBX problem on Tascam MS16

If all else fails, you can buy a used dbx I unit and patch it in. The stand alone 150 would work just fine.

I hope you mean "watts" because you don't want to hook spakers up to anything spitting volts.
