    thumb drive for samples?

With some caveats, this is usually fine. First, data transfer speed depends on the USB protocol , drivers, and mfg., the speed of the processor and the way the DAW handles data transfer to name a few internal issues. Does it load the complete sample into computer memory or is it drawing from...

    Random thoughts on compression

The waveform should not change except for the peaks that go above the threshold. This is assuming no gain after compression and 'digital' compressor(not modeled on a 'color' compressor). If you add gain, the waveform shape should not change, only the amplitude. If you add a second compressor...

    Jazz Bass pickup screw source..hard

Have you tried Stewmac.com? I am also curious why an American bass would have metric fasteners instead of US standard ?

    Amazon MP3 Purchases

One of the things that happens when either remastering or mastering for digital from previous analog recordings is limiting. In order to increase the level to modern levels for the most part. The problem with limiting is that it is still a form of compression, and like any compression, it...

Recording accoustic guitar: Getting rid of pick noise

I am guessing this thread got resurrected by a new sub. My two c: I agree with Dave about mic distance with this caveat- use go-bos or similar to reduce room noise, as that can kill the 'intimacy' as the op pointed out. I also agree that moving the mic to farther up and/or pointing away from...

Pedal with multiple od or distortion modes

I use amp distortion more often than pedals myself but pushing an amp with a gain stage before amplification is sometimes exactly what a part needs. I refuse to limit my tones to just those available with amps.

Pedal with multiple od or distortion modes

I use several pedals and often just distorting amps. The trick is to set them so that rolling off the volume of the guitar changes the timbre. Distortion adds harmonics, the more distortion, the richer the harmonics. Which is not always what is right for a particular song. Distortion also...

Pedal with multiple od or distortion modes

To tame harsh or 'fizzy" sound, run a fuzz through a DS1 or OD1. Loads of sustain without the nasty noisy stuff.

    ...favorite drummers?

The older I get the more I appreciate Simon Kirke. Awesome snare tone. Also Bob Benberg(Bob Seibenberg), Clive Bunker and Roger Taylor

Pedal with multiple od or distortion modes

I have a fuzz that does but I don't know about an analog pedal other than previously listed that does. The Carcosa fuzz. https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Carcosa--dod-carcosa-analog-fuzz-pedal There are distortion pedals that use both op amp and diode clipping, I don't know which ones...

    Microphone for recording bass guitar

I am going to throw out that I use a FET condenser. I run 15" LF drivers with 18" horns and place the mic around 3-4 feet away.

Taylor Guitars switching to D'Addario XS Phosphor Bronze

I prefer the D'Addario's on my Taylor. I think it really depends on genre and playing style. And probably body size.

I'm not a newbie - but feel like one!

Back in my 4 track cassette days I discovered, after recording several songs, that the speed control was one detent off. After they had been transferred to Pro Tools and subsequently lost to the mists of time. The very slight deviations of tape coupled with the speed difference mean digital...

    Filtering the bass

I'm with Mike, depends on the song. And especially on the type of kick sound wanted in a particular genre. Sometimes the kick carries the sub energy and sometimes the bass. I prefer the kick to handle the sub in most cases on modern non metal type rock and pop. Plus, with bass there can be a...

Is there a term for this?

If it's a standard Am being played, rather than a 7th of some kind then the vocal clash would have to be either the third or the fifth, since the duplicate root on the bass does not 'rub" against the vocal. I suspect the flat 3rd since it's not a Perfect interval, but the vocal could sill be...
