I use amp distortion more often than pedals myself but pushing an amp with a gain stage before amplification is sometimes exactly what a part needs. I refuse to limit my tones to just those available with amps.

I am going to throw out that I use a FET condenser. I run 15" LF drivers with 18" horns and place the mic around 3-4 feet away.

I prefer the D'Addario's on my Taylor. I think it really depends on genre and playing style. And probably body size.
