What did you produce in the Lockdown years?

If you have them still, stick them up - It's great to hear what others do.

Help Recording DI Distorted Guitar Tones

I just don’t understand this topic. What on earth does “it sounds like garbage” actually mean. I have real guitars, real gizmos on the floor, and in rack mounts and now lots of processors in the computer. Never has anything sounded like garbage. Lots of times i cannot get the sound i want. So i...

What did you produce in the Lockdown years?

I found this old video lurking - in the Covid days, nothing much to do so I recorded this old George Michael track - if you listen to it, at the end I found the George Michael isolated vocal and slapped it over the top. There are a few sync issues, but it's not too bad I think.

    Shure 330 Ribbon Mic

If you have tried multiple amps and guitars, you are left with two possibilities. The mic actually is resonating, or something in the room is. I would test the room first. A 20 to 20k sweep tone on youtube. Can you connect that to your system, and play it in the room. If yiu play it quite loud...

I bought a crazily cheap 'Neumann' TLM103 and it's really decent!

I do have a few I might be able to 'lose' - where are you

I bought a crazily cheap 'Neumann' TLM103 and it's really decent!

I wish I had your willpower - I'm a sucker, and don't now even know how many mics I have. I don't want to count them, but I have big plastic bins full of them now. I bet I have over a hundred now - yet the use every week list is maybe just ten? That is scary. What I am stuck with is how to...

    Shure 330 Ribbon Mic

I don't think I have ever seen one of these in the UK? Any chance of a short clip? 10 seconds would probably be enough to see if we recognise the sound?

Using Music Theory And Scaler 3

I'm not sure this is really new? Most arranger keyboards and those horrible one finger chords on organs have done it for 30+ years.

I'm writing my degree on the U47 and need your help

The thing that really annoys me is when they harvest the net for their data but never think to return with the conclusions. Its rubbish research for a poorly designed degree. When people do it properly, you get loads of university paperwork, telling you who is monitoring and controlling. They...

remote string recording services - anyone got experience?

Budget is not that tricky. How long do you want the musicians for. In the UK, minimum call would be 3 hours, if the musicians are doing this stuff all the time. You might get amateurs for less. Let's assume you get a group of semi-pro musicians, but they're strangers to you. They have no...

Would a Sennheiser MKH 805 be any good for recording?

I have lots of shotguns - from very short ones to crazily long ones and their usefulness for music recording is very limited. I tried one of the longer ones when a piccolo was drowned out, and I tried the long AKG 451/CK9 - which has incredible reach. What I had not considered was that though...

remote string recording services - anyone got experience?

The big snag is producing the music they need. For me it was a multi-stage process. I send my cubase file to a colleague, he produces the dots originally on sibelius, but more lately dorico. Now Cubase 14 has a version of dorico I'm trying to get his quality, and failing. The final part of the...

What are my chances of getting a hit in the Billboard Hot 100?

It seems the precise way things get on the Billboard charts is not publicised that well, but the UK system is actually well defined and I found the info on one of my distributors sites. They calculate streams paid for, and streams free differently. It makes some sense. I thought I was doing OK...

Another 'awkward' chinese mic - and something new?

I thought the handling noise not an issue - on both, moving your hand creates noise, but just different noise. I really liked the sound.

I'm writing my degree on the U47 and need your help

I watched it and a good summary would be that every capsule is different, due to a large number of variables, most of which are unrepeatable. His conclusion that the biggest variable that impacts sound is capacitance. What he struggled to evidence is any for of real link in the construction. As...

Another 'awkward' chinese mic - and something new?

Well, it arrived and I really like it - of course it does look like a Neumann, but as it has Bai Fei Li in red on the side there's no confusion, bar the model number - BF-105i. I seems just the sound I like! I put it up against a Shure NXN8s - big difference in price and type. The shure has...

    Mixing at the Source

I suppose the great of history just heard it in their head, when they were sitting at a keyboard. Either writing parts from scratch or orchestrating a piano or harpsichord/clav/celeste etc they just used the usual dynamic markings like we would do fader movements. If they were writing something...

Another 'awkward' chinese mic - and something new?

The recent furore on the TLM or not TLM 103 mic made me not post a link to another video I made about a mic that looks like the AKG C414 - and again, actually does a good job. The link is below, but today the same manufacturer sent me another mic - a 34mm condenser, but in a housing very...

I bought a crazily cheap 'Neumann' TLM103 and it's really decent!

Excellent - these clearly are very useful mics and at the price, you could buy a few and use them on loads of stuff. It's always good to get genuine bargains.
