Interesting mic setup for recording Aretha Franklin

Happened to see this pic in the story today about Aretha's passing....and couldn't help notice the tissue or handkerchief that is strategically placed on the mic...I assume to cut out reflections (?)...or...? Wonder if anyone has ever seen this before or knows of the specific reason why, and...

panning mono tracks for stereo mixdown

I use the line that goes straight out as my center point...and it splits the Snare and Kick...so they each sit slightly Left/Right of the line. To have them both be dead-center on the line...it would come in on an angle, which skews the kit to the right. Of course...a lot depends on how the...

    NGsD...

A coupe of months back in a Tele thread...(I think it was)...I had mentioned how this past winter I decided to sell my Fender '52 RI Tele, after having it since '95, but just not playing it hardly at all, due to the fact that I could never warm up to the feel of the '52 neck with it's very...

    Are you over-compressing your tracks?

I got a newsletter email with mixing "tips" from Waves, and one of the topics was about over-compression. I see a LOT of people here always saying to others, "You don't have any/enough compression, you need do add compression to this and that" ...and it has become like some sort of magic process...

    Otari MX80 remote shenanigans

OK...here's the scoop...DO NOT mess with those funny looking jumpers/globes...my CB-140 has the exact same mods, so I am certain that was done by Otari during manufacturing to fix some issue. Maybe later models don't have it, or they all have it. :D Considering that my CB-140 was a rebuild by an...

Cool New Mic Stands & Add-ons....

Came across these new stands and add-ons from Triad-Orbit...and totally blown away by the design and quality. Some of you might have seen these already...but I think they are a fairly new design and production, so I figured it might be of interest to anyone looking for top-notch mic stands, and...

    Piano to sound good

OK...if you find it a bit muddy...roll off the low-end using a low shelf EQ, and just move the shelf up in frequency while the piano plays, and find the spot where you think it's less muddy. Somewhere 150-250 HZ is where your shelf should start to roll off the low end. Something like this...

Nice setup, some extras...but I think he is delusional about the price. :D Well...he is also taking offers. That said...I use to dream about having one of these...way back in the day. :) I recall reading that the Eurythmics did their entire "Sweet Dreams" album on one of these...and I was...

A little bit of the blues...

I happened to come across this rare clip of Gary Moore playing "The Sky is Crying"...and while there are other clips of him playing this same tune at other concerts...this one, IMO is absolute gold. All I could think of is that if SRV had been still alive to hear this performance...he wudda...

Seeking feedback on acoustic treatment and design

So would this be the "before" and "after" measurements? Looking at all the different measurements in your first post...not sure if this would be the best one to compare to? I'm also not sure if you're using the same levels in your measurements...seeing the difference between these two. I would...
