A mic to complement my C1?

I'm in the market for a LDC mic to use (mostly) for male vocals which will complement the C1 that I currently own. I have been researching around here for quite a while, and I have been getting overwhelmed with the options that are out there. I will be using a SP VTB-1 as my main preamp, along...

Guitar cable length & signal loss

In the past I have heard that the maximum length for a guitar cable (non-balanced) is 18 feet 6 inches before you start to loose signal strength. Now I see that most high-end cable manufacturers don't sell 18' 6" cables anymore, the closest length being 20'. What gives? -mr moon

Mesa Recto vs. Marshall Mode-IV vs. ?

Hi. I've been looking for a 4x12 cabinet to use for gigging, for "band" practice (with a *LOUD* drummer and bass), and for recording. As I already have a Marshall 1965B 4x10 cab, I am looking for something that will cover the low-end better and not sound as "brittle" at higher volumes as the...

    1955 Fender Restoration?

Anyone else seen this? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2574697447&category=621 ...I'm thinking it might just be time to take out a loan (or two, or three...) to buy this, eh?! -mr moon

    Recto 4x12 cabinet: Alternatives?

The Mesa Boogie Recto Standard 4x12 cabinet has the low-end heavy sound I'm looking for to use for practices and gigging. I have tried the Marshall 1960a and 1960b cabs (75-watt drivers), and have found them to have way too much midrange for my taste. Are there any other cabs out there that...

    Drop-D tuner and/or bridge

Hi. Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with any of the "alternate" de-tunning devices that are on the market? I am looking at a couple of them because ...well, you know why. I hate to have to go through the whole re-tunning thing between songs that require different tunnings. Here's...

    4x10 cabinet "breaking up"

4x10 cabinet "breaking up" The sorted tale continues.... So, I have my new-used 4x10 cabinet (Marshall 1965B cab, loaded with four (4) 8-ohm 10-inch 35-watt speakers; 8-ohms total impedance) and my Marshall ValveState 100 (100-watt @ 4 ohms) head. I plug in my guitar and start playing for a...

    Tech21 Trademark 120

Tech21 Trademark 120: Does anyone have any experience with this amp? I curently have a Trademark 10 for recording purposes, but I may be doing some practicing/jamming/gigging where I'll need a bit more than 10 watts to cut above a *loud* drummer. The trademark 10 powers a 4x10 (Marshall...

    Rip apart new mix, please!

Hey! I just uploaded a new version of "Hindsight Is 20/20" to my music page on Soundclick. I would really appreciate it if you could check it out and let me know what you think. I was up late last night (this morning) working on it, so it's hard for me to tell if it’s any better than the last...

    Hindsight is 20/20

Please check out my latest demo, "Hindsight is 20/20" and help me figure out where I'm at with the mix. Besides the beginning, there are *NO* effects used, except for the distortion on the guitars. Please let me know what you think would work best for mix and effects, and whatever else. BTW...

New acoustic rock tune posted, please comment!

Hi, Please check out and comment on a new tune that I did with a bud of mine. The tune is called "Molds of Clay" and it is a collaborative effort between my bud, Jim, and I. He wrote the basic tune (acoustic guitar and vocals), and from there I added lead guitars, bass, etc., and we both put...

    Online/at-home audio recording classes: worthwhile?

Long story short (I hope...): I have set up a small home studio and would like to get some background education to help with my recording technique and abilities. I have checked out the area technical colleges, universities, and private audio recording schools, but they are all too expensive...

    Crossovers for nearfields and sub?

Hi. I have a pair of Alesis M1 mk2's and I'm planning on purchasing a sub to help fill in the missing low-end for mixing and mastering in my home studio. My questions: 1. Do I need to purchase crossovers (active or passive) to do this, or do I just need to connect the speakers and subs as...

    7-string guitar pickups

Hi. I'm looking for some replacement pickups for my Ibanez 7-string. This guitar will be used to play *Heavy* music for the most part, so it doesn't require any really clean tone. I've been looking into the SD Invader pickups, but I haven't found any "user" reviews about them, just company...

Bass Pre: VTB-1 vs. ART MP

Hi. From previous threads I've read here, people seem to agree that the VTB-1 does not work well as a bass pre, ....actually, most of you say that it sucks. I searched for previous threads on this topic and found several, one of which had sound files that compared the VTB-1 (SS and tube...

    RNC: Any really nice settings?

Hi. I purchased an RNC about a month or so ago and have been working with it on and off since then, with varying degrees of success. I was wondering if anyone out there who regularly uses the RNC could share with me their "normal" default settings that they have found work best for recording...

    Seymour Duncan "Invader" pickup

I want to get a heavier sounding bridge pickup for my 7-string guitar and several resources have pointed me toward the Seymour Duncan "Invader" 7-string bridge pickup. Does anyone have any opinions about this pickup? How does it compare to the Dimarzio "Blaze 7" pickups? (*Note: I want to...

    Decent 5-string bass needed

Hi, Is there playable, inexpensive 5-string bass out there that sounds really good? I just need something for the studio, so it doesn't have to be the best that's out there, but it *does* have to sound good. I've seen brands like Jay Turser, Johnson, Galveston, etc. on ebay for under or around...

    Inexpensive Ibanez 7-String

A quick "happy" :) note: I just picked up a new Ibanez AX7221-GP 7-string guitar for recording, for only $200.00 + $15.00 shipping. I cannot believe the high-quality of this thing for the money!! I have been playing guitar for over 20 years, so I'm not hot over my first guitar or anything...
