Do CPUs designed for higher speeds run hotter than slower chips?

Obviously, overclocking a chip raises its temperature significantly. So what's the temperature difference between, say, an old 700 Mhz Athlon and something new like an AthlonXP 1500? Does the faster chip run significanly hotter, or is part of the advance in the CPU production technology the...

    WinXP installation problem

I just got Windows XP Pro and was installing it this morning. I backed up everything and formatted my hard drive so I could do a clean install. It seemed to install OK, but it won't boot into the OS when I try to start it up (unless I use safe mode). The Windows XP loading screen fades in...

    Best mic for Harvey?

I want to record a Harvey Gerst (acoustic, not electric), and I don't know what mic to use. I have a computer mic and a Radio Shack mic. Which would be better?

Info on Primus' gear and recording techniques on the 'Tales From The Punchbowl' album

http://www.ram.org/music/primus/equipment/equipment.html Some good info here. It seems they recorded it at a house with some ADATs and Mackie boards. This page says some things I don't quite understand, like 'Les put an AKG C1000 next to a sliding glass door for the cymbal'. If there's...

Super Bawl Whine-O Wah on sale

At Musician's Fiend right now you can get a Snarling Dogs Super Bawl Whine-O Wah for 40 bucks (didn't there used to be a 'hot deals' forum?). When I bought my first one about three years ago, I paid $150. Since I love the wah, but my first one has had intermittent switch problems, I got...

Is $90 a decent deal for a used A Zildjian 17" Rock crash?

I found it under some crappy cymbals in my local pawn shop today. It doesn't seem like a great deal, but you never know. My ebay search was inconclusive--there are 2 17" Zildjian rock crashes up for auction, but they don't end for days and I have no idea how far the price will shoot up...

Doing my first recording for hire--what should I charge?

I'm friends with some guys who have a band that is soon to break up because the bass player is moving to L.A. They want to record one last time, and they know I have equipment and experience so they're going to do it with me. They mentioned paying me some money, but I don't know what to ask...

    Floyd Rose tremolos

I have (well, my dad has) a Yamaha guitar with a shit tailpiece in it. It's one of those tremolos with the fine tuners in it, but it doesn't work very well. It goes out of tune very easily. So I'm looking at picking up a used Floyd Rose tailpiece as a replacement. I see that they're going on...

    Miles Davis "Kind of Blue"

Could this album possibly sound any better? I don't think so. There's a picture of Miles near a LD mic in my issue of the CD. Does anybody know what mic it is?

How to get tom mount hardware??

I have an ancient set of Sonors (I'm pretty sure they're from the early '60s), and they have a super-cheesy tom mounting system. You have to adjust the mounts on the toms themselves with a drumkey, and they're connected to the bass drum with a pair of rods (connected together) sticking up that...

What's a good double kick drum pedal?

The pieceo'crap pedal I have just isn't cutting it anymore. I'd like to move up to a double, if possible. Can anybody recommend me a good one? Can I get a decent one for under $200?

    More front kick head stuff

OK, you people, time to put some money where some mouths are. I've heard a lot of people here say that they only get good results on tape (so to speak) from their kick drums if the front head ain't on there. For the longest time I didn't have a hoop or any hardware for the front of my kick...

Thinking of going up to Windows XP; looking for feedback

Here's the deal: my university (the University of Iowa) has an agreement with Microsoft whereby any student or faculty member can buy certain of their titles on the cheap. One of these is Windows XP (not sure if it's home or professional) for a mere 5 pezzutos. I'm going to buy it, no...

Am I slowly destroying my headphones?

I'm using the ever-popular Sorny MDR-7506s, and I love 'em. When I record my drum tracks, in order to hear the click and/or other tracks that I'm playing along to, I find that I have to stick earplugs in and turn the phones up really damned loud. If I do it without plugs, the drums drown out...

    The Presidents of the U.S.A.

I'm aware that a lot of people (a lot of boring stuffed shirts, anyway) don't have much good to say about these guys, but I think they were great. I'm listening to their first album right now, and I'm amazed at how great the drums sound on certain cuts (Boll Weevil, for example). Up front...

    Cool instrumental tune

Here's a mix of an instrumental tune I just did. I think it came out really nice. It's sort of jazzy, I guess, but hard to classify. It's called "Put It In H". Anybody get the reference? www.artistcollaboration.com/users/whoopysnorp/Put_It_In_H.mp3

I humbly request a drum module shootout

All this talk about DIY e-drums has gotten my interest piqued. I may decide to give it a try this summer, and I'd like to know what the different modules sound like. It's not really easy for me to get to a music store, and any store around here is not going to have much to choose from anyway...

    How did they do this?

I have here a snippet of a Kool Keith track called "Lost In Space". There's a woman's voice at the beginning that they did a very good job of placing 'behind' the listener. The first time I listened to this track, I about whirled around to check what was going on behind me. The effect was...

Best recorded drum sound (w/apologies to the guitar thread)

So how's about it? One of my picks is the sound on Morphine's Cure For Pain album. The sparse instrumentation of the group really lets the intonation of the drums and cymbals shine. Also, I like the drum sound on Resident Alien (the whole disc) by Spacehog. Well-tuned drums can't be beat.

    Endorphin rules

Yep...endorphin (the multiband compressor plugin) rules. It's just what I need to give my toms that wet low-mid tone that I like...think of the toms on Spacehog's 'Resident Alien'. Great sounding drums on that record. I put the plugin on each overhead, crank the low band compression to around...
