What do you think of this tone?

The guitar tone (in other words, forget the MIDI bass and MIDI drums). I'm gonna get back into recording some metal, and I've been listening to Iced Earth a lot lately, and am in love with the tone. I don't want to match it completely but it's an idea of where I want to go. I'd like to hear...

    Neck Replacement

I have a BC Rich Warlock out in my car-hole, the neck snapped after it fell down the stairs about two years ago. The neck is still attached to the body, it wasn't a complete break. Just wondering, is neck repair/replacement expensive? I paid €400 for it about 5 years ago (cheap I know, but I...

    Upwards software compressor

Ok, another question on plugins from me  Anybody know of any (mac-friendly) upwards software compressors? I think it'd be very useful for some tracks I have. Like the piano in this song, it's mostly loud enough to be heard, but there are a few notes that are just too under the bar...

    Free convolution reverb?

I've been looking for a free convolution reverb RTAS plugin for mac. They seem like specific requirements, because all I've found is free VST ones, or RTAS ones that are windows-only. Anybody know of any?

    "His Name Was"

I'd like to hear what you guys think. I'd consider this one of my first good mixes. Constructive criticism is always welcome :) PS: I did not write, or play on this song. Recorded and mixed only. Cheers. His Name Was

What kind of equipment do you guys reckon they're using? video I'd love to get tones like this but I have no idea what kind of stuff to get  I just love that really warm, chuggy type sound for metal. Gettin sick of fizz  Thanks guys :)

    Silly question about the SM57

I'm going to go ahead and assume that the 57 is cardioid the same way almost any other mic is. Because of the vents at the side of the mic right? I just gotta ask, I'm holding one here and I can't see em. Where are they??

    Off-Axis Frequency Response Charts

I'm doing a report on four different microphones, and they're looking for different specs etc. One of the mics has to be a multi-pattern condenser. That's fine. The problem is they're looking for the frequency response charts, on and off axis. I can't find any off-axis ones :confused...

    Original vs. Cover

Discuss  Few covers that did it for me: Thin Lizzy - Whiskey in the Jar (orig: The Dubliners) Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower (orig: Bob Dylan) Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (orig: Leonard Cohen) Nirvana - The Man Who Sold the World (orig: David Bowie) Ones that didn't: Madonna - American...

What defines the sound of an album?

I've been thinking about this for a while now. It's probably more apparent in rock and metal, however I find it quite interesting. Listen to 2 or 3 songs from Metallica's "Ride the Lightning", then 2 or 3 from "Master of Puppets" and "...And Justice For All". They each have a "sound" to them...

    Soloing while Mixing

Discuss... :D Seriously though, I understand soloing tracks while mixing if you're doing some corrective surgery like removing unwanted frequencies etc., but do any of you solo tracks that you're applying effects to? If so, why? I used to do it when I first started, now I've broken the...

    Ever get disheartened?

Hi guys, how are we all? :D There's been a lot of talk about writers block, and to be honest I'm going through a bit of a stint myself lately. But I've been thinking about it for a while and thought I'd put the question to all of you. A few years ago I was going through a bit of a rough patch...

    My new live setup... thoughts?

Ok, so I'm thinking of this for my new live setup and just wondering if there's any roadblocks. What I have: Rockwood Les Paul MBox 2 Boss ME-50 (just for a little compression going in, controlling peaks etc. nothing else) Guitar Rig 3.2.1 with Kontrol pedal What I want: I'll be looking into...

Converting Plugins - Windows to Mac

Hi everybody :) I've got PT8 on both my windows computer, and my imac. I tend to use the mac for tracking (it's more portable) and the pc for mixing as I have a few plug-ins on that which I frequently use. Is it possible to convert my windows plugins to mac plugins?

    I want your opinions :D

Over the next few months I'll be working with a band from Dublin (i lives there :D) and we'll be doing an EP. NOW! They have recorded a demo, and it sounds demo-esque, for two reasons. 1)the audio quality - which I'm not concerned with right now. 2)the production/songwriting etc. - which I...

    Boiling your strings

Has anyone ever done this? It's a great idea if you want that "new string" sound but don't have the cash for new strings. Hard times and all that :( I've heard, and experimented. I've done this with guitar strings and gotten some results, not too sure about bass but maybe one of you bass player...

    Distortion Guitar Clarity

Hello peoples, I'm having a bit of trouble with my distortion guitar tones. I want what nearly every rock guitarist wants: power and clarity. A few questions on how this is achieved though. I like a decent amount of distortion on my guitar for power. The problem is, if I'm playing chords, I...
