Are you using a recommended SD card or one that is of a rated class for speed/data exchange for the machine? Be aware there are counterfeit SD cards out there and buying from a sketchy retailer or ebay could get you something of poor quality that won't work right...
The means of backup is to your PC via the USB connection. I would trust this more than a CD and likely much faster.
