TEAC 32-2B Tape falling from heads during play/record

Yes, yes we are! We joke that our town is a “g-d geographical oddity… 1 hour from everywhere!” I shop a lot up in Branson, MO, and you’d think there would be a lot of equipment coming through there, but most of those venues and shows up there have long since converted to digital and sold all...

TEAC 32-2B Tape falling from heads during play/record

Thanks, sorry I got you riled up! ha ha I’m still learning about a lot of this but I’m learning and still interested in learning more! I know I’m looking for a true mastering style half track stereo. Most of this consumer/prosumer stuff is quarter track auto reverse, etc. Not what i want...

TEAC 32-2B Tape falling from heads during play/record

Under $1000, 100 miles, located in Northwest Arkansas (we are an hour away from Fayetteville and an hour away from Branson, two hours from Springfield, MO) Prosumer would work, esp if it was more “repairable”… but at the end of the day, all this has me questioning if it’s worth this path. The...

TEAC 32-2B Tape falling from heads during play/record

I agree, this is a consumer-grade machine in a professional housing. They were probably having trouble moving the X-10s and though by adding the pro Tascam name they'd get rid of more. I don't think I'm going to spend any more time on it. I have contacted one of the guys I know that has a few...

TEAC 32-2B Tape falling from heads during play/record

Okay, I tried that. Putting pressure on either pinch roller did nothing to stop the tape from falling away from the heads. I tried two small reels, I tried low speed as well as high speed. Same... All this with the ATR MDS-36 tape. I tried some older, thicker scotch tape that I got with another...

On the tension arms, I thought I’d try holding them down a little to see if the tape would correct itself and it didn’t help. Not the most scientific approach I know. I hope when I open it up, I’ll find out more.

TEAC 32-2B Tape falling from heads during play/record

@sweetbeats I found the service manual from the X-10R and it’s identical to the 32-2B service manual. I saw that statement that said there are NO adjustments to the capstan assembly!! I guess that’s why I often read statements like “Don’t sink any $$ into this machine”. Money pit. I’m going to...

TEAC 32-2B Tape falling from heads during play/record

@sweetbeats, I take it back, it appears that the TEAC Tascam Series 32-2 is more akin to the TEAC X-10m as you stated originally. https://reel-reel.com/tape-recorder/teac-x-10m/

TEAC 32-2B Tape falling from heads during play/record

Sadly I agree, but those rollers probably need to be replaced too. I got this one for $300, that’s probably about $100 in rubber plus labor. Is it worth it? So, do I get to the belt from the back or by dismantling the front? The service manual is unclear. The 32-2B is the same as the X-2000r.

TEAC 32-2B Tape falling from heads during play/record

Sorry, I thought that angle would be best since the heads are so hidden up there, harder to see from a whole tape path view. i can do another though. I have not checked tensions yet, I’ve never opened this unit up, but I do have the service manual. From what I can tell, it’s one capstan motor...

TEAC 32-2B Tape falling from heads during play/record

I’ll make that video in just a little bit. I’m using ATR MDS-36. I have some Recording the Masters LPR-35 that I haven’t tried yet. Thanks for the help!

TEAC 32-2B Tape falling from heads during play/record

This guy had the same problem but no solution was posted since 2016, sadly. https://www.tapeheads.net/threads/tascam-32-2b-capstan-speed.50061/

TEAC 32-2B Tape falling from heads during play/record

On the supply side, the pinch roller/capstan makes a squeaking noise as the tape starts getting squirrelly and then drops down from the play/record heads. This is new since I put it in storage last year (climate controlled). I have thoroughly cleaned the tape path (99% alcohol for heads, a...

    Tascam M520 Story...

Thanks, that settles that! I thought I was doing right but no matter how many times I read the manual, sometimes it confuses me and I second guess myself. I’ll keep going to the manual first before buggin’ you, so thanks for your help. I’m every so happy with my 520 and MS-16, they are such a...

Perfect! I’m already set up for all that with the MS-16 IN/OUT, you confirmed the use of the PGM OUT 1/2 and thank you for the AUX set to PGM too for the wet mix. All very helpful and makes total sense… it also means I’m “almost” getting it. You fleshed out the rest for the AUX and the best way...

    Tascam M520 Story...

I have been re-reading parts of this thread, trying to learn more now that I’m more fully using the M-520 with my MS-16. Man, so many ways you can set up the M-520 to work. I’ve learned a great deal from you and others on this thread. This (above) sparked a question: If I was wanting to take...
