    Rudy Van Gelder

I try to put my mind around all the the things this guy recorded, and it is allmost unfathonable. How can just one guy be behind the mics and boards for all these great recordings? From all those Blue Note's to "A Love Supreme". Is the dude just plain and simply God? I mean, what the fuck? It's...

    At 3525

I have a couple of these that I bought new about 4 years or so ago. I see that on ebay they do not even hold half the value of what I paid for them. I think they are pretty nice mics, for the price, but certainly not my best. They seem to need a lot of gain for them to really come alive. The...

Some guitar gods you may have missed

Some of you may know these cats, but some might not, and they are worth knowing about. Don Cabellero - if Rush morphed into Metallica, got even more complex, and ditched singers and guitar solos. Great stuff http://www.geocities.com/brikelly/doncab/ Slint - some say their Spiderland lp of the...

    Beyer m500 Fricken wow!

Wow, I picked up one used on ebay a few weeks back and it sounds so nice on most everything I have tried. I think it's the first mic I have ever heard on my voice that I actually like, and I have a bunch of differant condensors and dynamics. I can't believe how rich and open the thing is. Every...

A great suggestion for some new differant beats

Rap and hip hop is not the music I deal with, but if it's sonically new and lush with layers, I can really get into it (Dr. Octagon, DJ Spooky, the first Cypress Hill, Paul's Boutique, De La and Tribe...blah blah blah). Here is a great tip that will make your beats stand way the fuck out...

My new C4's - the good and the bad so far - my review

I needed to add a matched pair of SDC's to my mic locker. It was the last piece of my list I needed. So, after reading so many good things about C4's (within $ limitations) compared to others on this site I made my plunge. I bought them last week or so, but tonight was my first real experiance...

    Help! DMP3 Mic preamp/phantom power/low end hum

I just got in the mail a DMP3 as my first intro into mic pre-amps outside of the ones in my main mixers. I plug it into my board, and try it out with a sm57 and a beyer 500. Sounds great. So, i plug in a condensor mic and press the 48v, and low end hummmmmmm. I thought it was the C4, so i...

    DJL vs. Studio Projects

I love this site and slowly over the last month have been going through all the threads on the mic forum. It's some of the best reading I've had in a long time. I've really come to enjoy the fact hat almost every time someone brings up a SP point, DJL begins his bashing. This is almost always...

Somebody else posted a link to these guys site, but not for this mic. Its sure looks cool. It would be nice to have lots of $ that I could throw around at stuff I probably would rarely, if ever, use. www.theaudio.com/bs-3d.html Alos, whats the scoop on Reference Condensor Mics in general...

    Phantom power and ribbon mics

This may have all ready been discussed a while ago, so, sorry if its a dumb question or a repeat. I have read that phantom power hurts a ribbon mic. I have also read the opposite is true. Both sides seemed pretty impassioned. Whats the scoop?

    Vintage ribbon mic help

I picked up a vintage ev v1 ribbon mic. It appears to be in decent shape cosmetically, but i have yet to open it up to look at its insides. How will i tell if the ribbon is broke? is it obvious? Also, it has a weird plug/cord that extends to a screw like connector that is just a brown circle...

Help me make my mic choice, please.

I have a bunch of decent mics, a couple of at4033's, a couple of gt tube mics, and a few other other LDC's. I also have a few sm58 etc. type mics. I know its all subjective, but I like what I have and have gotten good results. Besides a ribbon mic, which I am still researching what to get in...
