Well, I did it. I went and bought the Brent Averill vintage AUDIX 35102's! A pair, with power supply.
I'm excited. Just want to try them out already.
Hope they give me what I'm looking for, but either way, I know they'll be better than what I'm using now.
Anyone ever heard of a German made console called EAB?
Know anything about them? What are their mic pre's like?
Supposedly they were made to compete with Neve's.
New MP3 up. It's called "Lakeside Rainfall".
There's a bass drum in this song, meant to emulate thunder. Have a listen, please, and let me know if you think the level on the "thunder" is too high.
Thanks...
Ok, couple of files here. Both of thes files are recordings of a 7'-2" Boston Semi Concert Grand Piano. They were both recorded dry. No EQ. No processing.
One file was done with a pair of ECM8000's.
The other was done with a pair of....... ahhhh!! I'm not gonna tell ya! See if you can...
I've seen several references to a 3:1 mic/distance ratio on this board. Someone, pretend I'm an idiot, and explain what this is about. I'm assuming it has to do with eleminating phase problems when stereo micing?
...for the gazillinth time, but I'm looking for an additional mic pre-amp. (I know, I know)
But I think I can be a little more specific than "What's the best mic pre for under $200!"
I record primarily solo piano, of the large grand type, and ocassionally vocals of the sultry female varitey...
Has anyone used this vintage mic? I'm thinking it would be great on vocals, being that it was a broadcast mic. Also, will 48 volt phantom power, power this mic?
I think I have these three figured out, in theory at least.
In the simplest definitions:
Compression- allows for gain reduction of a given frequency response (actually, my compressor allows for gain reductions over multiple frequency responses at the same time)
Limiting- inhibits db output...
I'm really interested in the Neumann TLM 50-S. It is advertised as a "Pressure Mic". What is a pressure mic? How does it differ from a condensor mic, if it does at all? Also, I can't seem to find one on-line. Does anyone know where to find it on-line?
We all know that every recording environment has some inherent "ambient" noise. So if I say, tried to record that noise, then ran it through a spectral analyzer and found out the frequency range of that noise, would that information be at all helpful in trying to attenuate/eliminate the noise...
I just finished a new recording. I'd really like to know what you all think of the quality. (although this is an MP3)
Be brutally honest, don't hold back, and let me know if you think it's marketable. This is a piano solo with some flute, string section, and french horn augmentation
The link...
Who's doing Multi-Channel Recording? Don't confuse this with Multi-Track Recording. I'm talking about Multi-Channel Recording; i.e: Surround Sound. And, more to the point, how are you monitoring it? I was thinking of obtaining a pair of event 20/20bas monitors for the front, LT & RT...
What do/can you do to keep dust down in your studio?
It seems I am ALWAYS dusting in my studio. I have a big grand piano in my studio, which is of course a big dust magnet! lol Not to mention all the other gear. My studio is well planned, well organized, and well thought out for a home...
I have been trying to record a grand piano for some time now. Usually the results are less than stellar.
I recently bought a new piano, a 7'-2" Boston, Semi Concert Grand.
The attached file is a short recording of me playing it.
I used 2 Neumann TLM-103's in an ORTF config, splayed at about...
OK, I'm about to make the plunge and purchase a Boston 7'-2" semi-concert Grand Piano for my studio!
Here's a picture of it:

The only thing I'm wondering about is how it will sound in my studio. The room it will go in is about 15'X17'with 9'...
Has anyone ever used Royer Ribbon mics?
I read a review on the R-121, and it was surprisingly favorable. The one thing that has me wondering though, is the specs. The R-121, and its stereo counterpart the SF-12 both show a frequency response of 30Hz to 15KHz. I usually look for frequency...
