    String brands and tension

I have no info regarding tension between different brands of the same gauge. Not sure there isn't a difference but I've never even heard anyone mention such a thing. The only strings of the same gauge that feel and seem to bend differently IMO are flat wounds.....but that's not about brand. Mick

    Using limiters on Mix busses?!

Yes...go back to your mix and use volume automation to LOWER the peaks that are problematic....not raise everything else. Then you use less compression which is killing parts of your drum tracks. Smoother compression will help too. Mick

Guitar setup question, or how did I screw stuff up so bad..

Ok...so you're sure the new set is the same gauge as the old one. That has to eliminate the strings. As for the bridge.......unless you took measurements prior to removal you can't tell 100% from a pic how the old one was set. But....lets assume the pic is correct. Assuming you did nothing...

Stereo Mix isn't translating well when played through smartphone speakers

Assuming you've avoided any phase issues in the mix...and your phone is genuinely "stereo" (what model is it?)....then you're likely trying to make a the phone sound like something it can't. No matter what....do not make any mix adjustments based on how your mix sounds on phone speakers. Mick

Master Opinion, is it too squashed? too compressed? Dynamics?

Based on your replies....you seem to be struggling with the suggestions because....in part....you like the mix as it is and the suggestions change the result too much for you. There's nothing wrong with that. After all.....John Lennon loved Yoko's tracks....and I and many others didn't. Be...

Master Opinion, is it too squashed? too compressed? Dynamics?

This time I listened all the way to the end...including that 10 second noise at the very end. My opinion is that it's still unlistenable and too harsh for me. The panned guitars are too up front....too wide....and too harsh. NOW......that's just me and my thoughts should NOT deter you from...

    Opinion on my Master needed!

Yes.....I should have been a bit more clear. I was referring to some frequencies in your track being harsh. It's also difficult to outline which ones could be the offenders......although I think it's the smash compression effect that's causing most of the issues I don't care for. Keep in...

Back in the game after 8 years...

Yeah...something about the tuning of the guitars is very distracting and changes the character of the song. It seems like maybe it's your playing or fingering technique as much or more than the guitar being out of tune because there are passages that seem well tuned. Other than that.....any...

    Opinion on my Master needed!

IMO way too smashed and crunchy!!! Had to quit it about at 2:30. Too harsh to listen to....not to mention exceedingly repetitive and boring. Genre and content aside......the master needs lots of work IMO only. No one adjustment is going to be the answer. When you are measuring your LUFs...

How do I play along with songs I like?

Hey scotnewon96. My answer would depend on a couple things. First....how old are you and second.....what's your overall goal for learning bass? You don't mention if you're learning from a teacher. If you have any aspirations of playing with others...you might want to get some good early...

HD Storage options for the PC

Yeah......I finally got rid of all my spinning drives. The overall speed got better without a doubt. I've had two of them for at almost 5 years now.....proving their reliability and durability to me. IMO....your backup drive is the most important drive. Mick

"Indie Rock Band" - New electronic Rock Song

The vocal threw me for a loop...........but oddly......I got used to it. I'm assuming that was a chosen performance. As for the rest of it......not an Indie fan...but I thought it was cool IMO. Mick

Is there anything wrong with using the recording compensated outputs?

Yeah.....with that setup you should be able to get pretty much near any sound (short of a Ric 325 and a Vox AC30) you want. The issue about technique does have some validity.....but can't account for wide tonal differences with identical setups. Some.....for sure......pick...

When to take jobs on and when not to

There are thoughtless self centered people like that of all ages. You aren't the reason for her character flaws. Mick

Is there anything wrong with using the recording compensated outputs?

Hey Lazer......been following this thread but I have to admit I'm confused about your signal path and amps and speakers. If that's your photo are you running into a stereo PA system? Anyway.....do a quick list of your signal path if you can. Also....what guitar are you using most? Have you...

    Sanding down a poly neck

I'd be interested to hear how it turns out. One of my Strat necks has a satin finish and it has an excellent feel. If the neck is natural and a bolt on maybe you might think about removing it and sanding it down and spraying on a satin finish, 2 cents worth of......if I knew what I was...

I'm looking for a good starter vocal mic for under $300 USD - is it possible?

Look.....I'm talking about the "results" (after applying any EQ or whatever) sounding ok to a listener. He or she doesn't need to know what mic was used. And as I've said.....OK to one might be great to another...or garbage to another. Because a listener doesn't have an idea or understanding...

I'm looking for a good starter vocal mic for under $300 USD - is it possible?

Hmmmm.....never said they were the SAME in any way. Physically...they couldn't be. Not likely sound wise either. But that's true of any two different mics....cheap...expensive...whatever. "As good" refers to the RESULTS......AFTER EQ or whatever is applied..........not before. And you...

I'm looking for a good starter vocal mic for under $300 USD - is it possible?

Hmmmm........Isn't it the result that counts......and not the equipment? I'm absolutely sure I would buy a U47 if it was say......$500 or so. Not trying to disparage that mic....but so what? If what I produce with...as you say...."bottom" line equipment.....sounds as good or better....what's...
